Three years on \u2018This Addiction\u2019<\/em> and following an acoustic record (2011\u2019s \u2018Damnesia\u2019<\/em>) and one or two side projects, Alkaline Trio<\/strong> have returned with \u2018My Shame Is True\u2019<\/em> and on the surface, it\u2019s business as usual; a tight collection of melodic punk rock with a subtle dark twist. However, vocalist Matt Skiba\u2019s songwriting steps up a notch by taking a more direct, personal approach with the end result being some of the bands best work in recent years.<\/p>\n Following the Ramones-influenced opener \u2018She Lied To The FBI,\u2019<\/em> the catchy \u2018I Wanna Be A Warhol\u2019<\/em> kick-starts the record with that familiar Alkaline Trio<\/strong> melodic drive. While \u2018Kiss You To Death\u2019\u00a0<\/em>is a brooding, heartfelt love song that is perfectly executed with an energetic payoff.<\/p>\n Later on vocals from bassist Dan Adriano and Tim McIlrath of Rise Against compliment each other well on \u2018I, Pessimist\u2019<\/em> a blistering two-minute punk rock onslaught. \u2018Only Love\u2019<\/em> is a slightly haunting ballad-like number with a playful piano melody throughout whilst Adriano\u2019s vocals confidently soar. Penultimate track\u00a0\u2018Young Lovers\u2019\u00a0<\/em>strongly showcases a similar trait.<\/p>\n The downfall of \u2018My Shame Is True\u2019<\/em> there are times you can\u2019t help but feel the band’s ideas are recycled. Tracks like \u2018The Torture Doctor\u2019<\/em> and \u2018One Last Dance\u2019\u00a0<\/em>are pleasing enough to longtime fans, yet they could appear on any one of Trio\u2019s previous releases.<\/p>\n However \u2018Midnight Blue\u2019\u00a0<\/em>is one notable highlight with Skiba\u2019s compassionate lyrics, upbeat tempo and it\u2019s subtle guitar solo, adding another dynamic to the bands sound.<\/p>\n Overall on first listen its easy to class \u2018My Shame Is True\u2019<\/em> as just \u201canother Alkaline Trio record\u201d<\/em> but with Skiba\u2019s cathartic lyrics, Bill Stevenson\u2019s slightly slick production and the bands tighter sound reminds you why you liked Alkaline Trio<\/strong> in the first place.
