\"image\"Marine Electric<\/strong>\u2019s \u2018Restrained Joy\u2019<\/em> would be a much better record if it ever really let itself get going. It doesn\u2019t help that opening track \u2018Change Your Mind\u2019 <\/em>is something of a plodder \u2013 summing up my overall feelings of this record very quickly. It\u2019s good, it sounds good, and it\u2019s clearly crafted with skill and care but there\u2019s just something missing.
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Second track \u2018Street Guitars\u2019 <\/em>shows promise and showcases some great gruff vocals and heavier guitars. Were\u00a0Marine Electric<\/strong> to maintain this intensity over ten songs this album may have earned another star. As \u2018Pretty Good Day To Be Alive\u2019<\/em> hits the speakers I\u2019m excited \u2013 a song big from the beginning, inviting melodic vocals and the promise of an excellent sing-a-long chorus \u2013 but sadly it never happens. At 37 seconds long \u2018Pretty Good Day\u2019…\u00a0<\/em>is a let down. There\u2019s too much going on for such a short song but it hasn\u2019t quite the power to provide a Kid Dynamite-esque burst of punk rock glory.<\/p>\n

&amp;lt;a href=“http:\/\/marineelectric.bandcamp.com\/album\/restrained-joy” data-mce-href=“http:\/\/marineelectric.bandcamp.com\/album\/restrained-joy”&amp;gt;Restrained Joy by The Marine Electric&amp;lt;\/a&amp;gt;<\/p>\n

\u2018Murder Mile\u2019<\/em> is a great song, bursting at the seams with raw passion, heart on sleeve vocals, and solid musicianship. It gives way to \u2018Live Oak\u2019, <\/em>which for me is the best song here; more of the same only with bigger melodic sections and a brilliant mid-section leading to a soft, fuzzy. \u2018Ride It Out\u2019 <\/em>continues the theme of great songs in the middle of this record. Beautiful riffs, incredible sounding guitars, building to choruses that scream for sweaty sing-a-longs in dark rooms. \u2018Real Numbers\u2019<\/em> is another of the truly excellent songs making up the core of this album. There\u2019s really nothing more to say about this album\u2019s best songs \u2013 including ninth track \u2018Silver For Lead.\u2019<\/em>\u00a0 They show great passion, great skill, and they maintain the kind of intensity expected of a record wearing its Hot Water Music hoodie with pride.<\/p>\n

Marine Electric <\/strong>could well be on to something here. This is a record with wonderful, if somewhat unfulfilled promise. It strikes me that this could be a band that would kill it live and have simply not quite caught the nail fully in the studio. This is by no means a bad record, it\u2019s one I\u2019m happy to add to my collection, but there is something missing. Had the five standout tracks been released as an EP then I\u2019d be debating whether or not to give this the coveted fifth star. As it stands there\u2019s just too much missing in the surrounding tracks and with the pedal never quite to the metal it looses out.<\/p>\n
