{"id":3234,"date":"2017-01-23T11:45:19","date_gmt":"2017-01-23T11:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-sam-skinner-danny-through-junior\/"},"modified":"2018-03-21T22:16:00","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:16:00","slug":"review-sam-skinner-danny-through-junior","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-sam-skinner-danny-through-junior\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Sam Skinner &#8211;\u00a0Danny Through Junior"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/7c87aa9544fde9f612a7eb4a1490c048\/tumblr_ojw07zX49O1r8no6so6_r1_1280.jpg\" width=\"250em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p>They\u2019re a talented bunch, those Pinegrove guys and gals, and guitarist <b>Sam Skinner<\/b> is the latest to break from the day job to release an intriguing and beguiling solo EP. <\/p>\n<p>Only five songs long, <i>\u2018Danny Through Junior\u2019<\/i> is a kaleidoscope of textures and sounds, as beautifully arranged as Pinegrove\u2019s \u2018Cardinal\u2019 breakout but a few steps removed from the group\u2019s indie-rock\/alt-country influenced sound. <\/p>\n<p>In fact, it\u2019s easy to be reminded about Brooklyn\u2019s Volcano, I\u2019m Still Excited!! throughout <i>\u2018Danny Through Junior\u2019<\/i>, as there\u2019s a similar melancholy feel and woozy playfulness about songs like <i>\u2018Chestnuts\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Joel\u2019 that recalls the irreverent and pioneering Polyvinyl act at their loosest and infectious best. <\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>It means <i>\u2018Danny Through junior\u2019<\/i> is a constant surprise, filled with so many rich layers it\u2019s a warm and inviting listen, but requires a little bit of patience to really get every nuance. Indeed, you could just focus on a particular sound and let it carry you through the song. It\u2019s a rewarding and enjoyable journey and testament to <b>Skinner<\/b>\u2019s stunning arrangements that you want to invest so much in a bittersweet five song EP. <\/p>\n<p>It feels appropriately different from Pinegrove too, despite the similar countrified guitar tones, with the gorgeous <i>\u2018Stout\u2019<\/i> in particular serving as an appropriate bridge. That said, <b>Skinner<\/b>\u2019s haunting vocals are a world away from Evan Stephens Hall\u2019s, so <i>\u2018Danny Through Junior\u2019<\/i> never feels like it is just a Pinegrove-lite EP.
