That day a few weeks back when the world found out Finch<\/strong> would reform for some shows was an absolute dream come true to some of the population of this world. A 10-year anniversary show celebrating the release of \u2018What It Is To Burn\u2019<\/em> with the said album being played in full! Pinch me now, right?<\/p>\n

Well, maybe not right. One of our writers Ollie Connors is pretty convinced that ‘Say Hello To Sunshine\u2019<\/em> is Finch<\/strong>\u2019s best album. So, Sean Reid steps up to defend ‘What It Is To Burn\u2019<\/em>. This one could get nasty\u2026<\/p>\n

‘What It Is To Burn\u2019<\/strong> (by Sean Reid)<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s get this straight, Finch<\/strong>\u2019s d\u00e9but album ‘What It Is To Burn’\u00a0<\/em>is simply brilliant. It thrives on the band’s youthful hunger and benefits from Mark Trombino production; although some may say it hinders the album by making it to polished in places.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, it\u2019s packed full of great, great songs that have made ‘WIITB\u2019<\/em> a \u201ccult classic\u201d ten years later. Tracks like ‘New Beginnings\u2019<\/em> and ‘Grey Matter\u2019<\/em> have a post-hardcore edge that supplements the more\u00a0accessible\u00a0songs like ‘Letters To You\u2019<\/em> and ‘Stay With Me\u2019<\/em>\u00a0that take on a more chorus-driven approach yet the album throughout is carried by Finch\u2019s high-energy.<\/p>\n

From start to finish ‘WIITB\u2019<\/em> has stand-out tracks, most which have huge, momentous choruses; ‘Untitled,\u2019<\/em> ‘Without You Here\u2019<\/em> and of course ‘What It Is To Burn.’\u00a0<\/em>It\u2019s a style that opened doors and introduced fans to bands such as Thrice, Senses Fail, Saosin and Matchbook Romance.<\/p>\n

On top of this, the band’s knack of producing \u201ccatchy\u201d edgy post-hardcore songs comes off a original, even if it\u2019s not entirely but ‘WIITB\u2019<\/em> sounds refreshing and at times overwhelmingly exciting. And in the spectrum of Drive-Thru bands, back in 2002, they gave the label something different from the MTV-friendly Pop Punk bands.<\/p>\n

Perhaps like many I didn\u2019t quite embrace ‘Say Hello To Sunshine\u2019<\/em> as much as I should of, yet I appreciate Finch\u2019s progression on that record, but it\u2019s their d\u00e9but that I\u2019m still fond of ten years later. A superb collection of chorus-focused, post-hardcore songs that have somehow turned out to be timeless and continue to gain new fans purely on its great balance of aggression and melody.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t wait for March and sing ‘What It Is To Burn\u2019<\/em> in complete unison.<\/p>\n
