Thank God then for <b>Frank Carter &amp; The Rattlesnakes<\/b> and their sophomore album <i>\u2018Modern Ruin\u2019<\/i>. With a sound developed beyond the confines of hardcore, it is loaded with hooks and power chords and Carter&rsquo;s uncompromising vitriol, it has an undeniable quality from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>The lazy croon of <i>&lsquo;Bluebelle\u2019<\/i> provides a deliberately false start, before the rocking mid-tempo of <i>&#8216;Lullaby\u2019<\/i> bubbles along like a souped up Arctic Monkeys.  Sure, there\u2019s a noticeably commercial edge, but <i>&#8216;Snake Eyes\u2019<\/i> and <i>&#8216;Vampires\u2019<\/i> sees the band provide a double-barrelled attack of snappy driving rock, all the while hinting at Carter&rsquo;s pop tropes.<!-- more --><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Even so, there is still plenty of straightforward punk to get your teeth into. <i>&#8216;Jackals\u2019<\/i> is a frantic one minute slice of punk rock, while <i>&#8216;Wild Flowers\u2019<\/i> and <i>&#8216;Real Life\u2019<\/i> are particularly rough and ready, the latter delivering a killer chorus. Then there\u2019s the title track, which is pure hardcore fury with a liberal spattering of vitriol.<\/p>\n<p>As a whole, there&rsquo;s little wrong on <i>&#8216;Modern Ruin&rsquo;<\/i>. Whether it\u2019s barbed wire love songs like <i>&#8216;Acid Veins\u2019<\/i>, which sees Frank stretching his vocal chords, or more insightful tracks like the fast-paced rocker <i>&#8216;God is My Friend&rsquo;<\/i>. Album closer <i>&#8216;Neon Rust\u2019<\/i> is also killer; it\u2019s essentially a ballad featuring fragile vocals lamenting the wasteland of the modern world, before descending into a wild finale.<\/p>\n<p>However above everything else, <i>&#8216;Thunder&rsquo;<\/i> is the album centerpiece. This heartbreaking glimpse of the prejudices of the violent post-Brexit world is nothing short of excellent.
