Welcome to another instalment in Something For The Weekend<\/strong>. You may of noticed that we skipped a week last week – fear not, this is not a sign of us slowing down but one of us speeding up! We’ve been implementing a few new ideas behind the scenes to make this even better, the beginning of which you’ll see next week. This week, however, we have a couple of punkier offerings in the forms of Sentient<\/strong> and Valys<\/strong> and a more upbeat, pop rock choice in Spineless Yes Men<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sentient<\/strong>
For Fans Of: Squints Palledorous, and Egos At The Door
Sadly Squints Palledorous are no more but luckily, out of the casket, rises Sentient. Sentient features many of Squints members with a couple of new additions giving them a heavier, rawer sound. This is still fast, spazzy punk but it seems that more of a hardcore influence has snuck in. They’ve only released one song so far but I dig it – have a listen and make up your own mind.<\/p>\n

Valys<\/strong>
For Fans Of: Make Do And Mend, and Our Time Down Here.
Earlier this year Valys released their\u00a0d\u00e9but\u00a0EP, ‘Compass,’<\/em> and really worked their way into my consciousness. The four tracks on offer are a good example of modern rock combined with the mid-2000’s post hardcore sound (think Thursday or Crime In Stereo). With a single coming out on Pornography For Cowards<\/strong> later this year and a good few plans being drawn up for 2012, they are definitely a band to follow. Valys, proof that not all in Grimsby is grim!<\/p>\n

Spineless Yes Men<\/strong>
For Fans Of: One Day Elliot and Failure By Design.
Spineless Yes Men hail from the polluted city of London. Despite the almost constant low lying level of smog, the Yes Men stay sunny and even during their darkest moments their pop rock stays delightfully upbeat. They formed in 2009 and – after a couple of line up changes – have managed to share stages with Our Time Down Here, MxPx and Apologies, I Have None. It’s not ground breaking, but it is catchy.<\/p>\n
