No-one can accuse Lowell, MI\u2019s The Fake Boys<\/b> of playing to the choir, and \u2018I Love My Life When You\u2019re Around\u2019<\/i> is one of those obstinate albums you\u2019ll either get on first listen or spend a lifetime working out. <\/p>\n

Playing a form of twisted pop that is thick with sludge and flyaway power chords, \u2018I Love My Life\u2026\u2019<\/i> also contains some devilishly contagious hooks, offsetting the gruff, grungey vocals and hard rockin\u2019 edge. If it sounds confusing, just check out the frazzled \u2018Wormy\u2019<\/i>, a wonderfully warped indie-rock gem that includes wild howls and a tripped out guitar solo, yet still remains incredibly infectious despite its testing nature. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s this oblique attitude that steals the show time and again on \u2018I Love My Life\u2026\u2019<\/i>. Like fellow personality driven acts The Hold Steady, Titus Andronicus and Japandroids, The Fake Boys<\/b> exist in a genre entirely of their own making. Not quite indie, punk, pop or rock, \u2018I Love My Life\u2026\u2019<\/i> still manages to place a limb in all these arenas and sound like no-one else out there \u2013 especially on the stripped back \u2018Sick Mostly\u2019<\/i>. <\/p>\n

There are a few moments when it doesn\u2019t quite work. The vocals, while powerful, sound like a real throwback to the early 90s grunge\/metal heyday \u2013 think somewhere between Billy Corgan and James Hetfield and you\u2019re on the money \u2013 and can be initially off-putting. Another lighter track in the vein of \u2018Sick Mostly\u2019<\/i> or the entertaining \u2018OK, I\u2019m Up\u2019<\/i> would have also been most welcome too, if only to add some more texture to an album filled with sludgy, stodgy jams. <\/p>\n

Yet for all this, what The Fake Boys<\/b> have delivered is an album that refuses to conform to styles, trends and conventions \u2013 and is ultimately better for it. <\/p>\n
