\"\"Burn Daylight<\/strong> is an earnest, Essex-based folk-punk singer-songwriter in the style of Dave House, writing songs about his surroundings like Apologies I Have None with the catchy hooks of Frank Turner. It sounds like a great mix, right? Well it most certainly is. \u2018Young Lions\u2019<\/em> is the latest release from this underground acoustic artist, and one that is sure to garner more attention for the young songwriter.<\/p>\n

Opening up the EP is \u2018Jane,\u2019<\/em> a song name shared with a Loved Ones track and featuring the same passionate punk heart, albeit in acoustic form. There is world-weariness to the song that shines through and a yearning to document the everyday emotions of life and love.<\/p>\n

The inclusion of brass in \u2018Euston Didn\u2019t Know What It Was Missing\u2019<\/em> brings to mind fellow Essex compatriot Get Cape Wear Cape Fly. The introspective and personal lyrics coupled with the delicately picked guitar melody may well be an imitation of Southend\u2019s original pop-punk troubadour but it is done so well that you don\u2019t really mind.<\/p>\n

Following this is \u2018New York And Me\u2019<\/em> is a more upbeat, electric guitar based track, an anomaly on this EP but no less catchy. It is reminiscent of Frank Turner, \u2018Poetry of the Deed\u2019<\/em> era, with a definite poppy edge to it.<\/p>\n

Closing the EP is the slower, smoother and more sombre title track, \u2018Young Lions.\u2019<\/em> A memorable and inspiring song featuring some great saxophone and the memorable refrain \u201cwe were young lions back then,\u201d<\/em> it is a powerful track to see off an impressive EP.<\/p>\n

There is a lot to admire about the way Burn Daylight makes music. It is a DIY ethos and community-led approach that drives the entire punk scene forward and \u2018Young Lions\u2019 is the epitome of that. It\u2019s a guy making music because he and his friends love doing it and that earns this reviewer\u2019s respect. \u2018Young Lions\u2019<\/em> is an EP with a whole lot of heart and should be given a listen solely for that reason. Oh, and the tunes aren\u2019t bad either.<\/p>\n
