\"\"I Like Trains<\/strong> are a post-rock band from Leeds that have had a long time to hone their sound.\u00a0They first came onto most people\u2019s radars during the Great Indie Boom of 2006, and then\u00a0faded off most people\u2019s radars almost as quickly. This new EP, \u2018Beacons’<\/em>,\u00a0follows their third\u00a0albums. The EP features the title track \u2018Beacons\u2019<\/em>, familiar to fans of their third album \u2018The\u00a0Shallows\u2019<\/em>, and three brand new tracks. Despite having a silly name, I Like Trains<\/strong> here deliver\u00a0an enjoyable four track EP of trademark gloom.<\/p>\n

\u2018Beacons\u2019<\/em>, the eponymous track of the EP, pulses with a dark and pleasantly sinister energy\u00a0from the opening couplet “I will be taking care of business, I\u2019ll run it all into the ground.”<\/em> The effect of early-Horrors electronics with a White Lies-esque vocal style within the\u00a0aesthetics of Editors is captivating and truly compelling. This is indie music at its\u2019 darkest\u00a0and most powerful.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u2018Rome\u2019<\/em> also burns with this sombre electronic energy. More delicate than \u2018Beacons\u2019<\/em>, it\u00a0is reminiscent of The All New Adventures Of Us going to a funeral. The deliberately\u00a0understated vocals and electronics make this an ambient and effective track, slowly layering\u00a0up.<\/p>\n

\u2018Easter Island\u2019<\/em> continues the slow build, acting as an interlude of sorts for \u2018Jericho\u2019<\/em>. A\u00a0seething cauldron of emotion, there is menace in the softly-spoken lines such as \u201cI\u2019ll take\u00a0your idle threats and I\u2019ll see them through.\u201d Lyrically, this EP is head and shoulders above a\u00a0lot of other generic indie music out there.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Setting Sun\u2019<\/em>, almost poetically, closes this EP. It has slightly more urgency than the rest\u00a0of the EP, a faster beat but still a reserved nature to it\u2019s\u2019 undercurrent of malice. The synth\u00a0sounds are stunning and reminiscent of The Horrors \u2018Sea Within A Sea\u2019<\/em>. There is a masterful\u00a0simplicity and calm to I Like Train<\/strong>\u2019s sound that is belied by the introspective and darkly\u00a0poetic lyrics. This EP is like a car crash in slow motion; deadly, yet beautiful, destructive yet\u00a0compelling.<\/p>\n

This is a brooding and understated effort for fans of Nick Cave or The Horrors. \u2018Beacons\u2019<\/em>\u00a0never breaks out of an almost hypnotic rhythm throughout and is a mesmerising listen. It\u2019s\u00a0not one for all seasons, and its\u2019 just as well winter is approaching as this is one to listen to on\u00a0the upcoming cold, dark nights.<\/p>\n
