Fall Out Boy<\/strong>. Let\u2019s do it. A pop punk band with vast potential who then got bigger, and bigger, and somehow even bigger than that until they decided to disband for the time being. They\u2019re probably one of the biggest pop punk bands on the planet and the earlier albums of \u2018Take This To Your Grave\u2019<\/em> and \u2018From Under The Cork Tree\u2019<\/em> undoubtedly influenced many bands we love oh so much today. Combine all that with our \u2018Versus\u2019<\/em> feature and it seems pretty clear what\u2019s going on here. Yep. Head to head, which is better?<\/p>\n

Two of\u00a0Already Heard<\/strong>\u2019s writers, Tom White and Michael Brown go head to head to tell you which album they think is best and why.<\/p>\n

Tom will be defending the honor of 2003 album\u00a0\u2018Take This To Your Grave,\u2019<\/em>\u00a0whilst Michael will be battling as to why\u00a0\u2018From Under The Cork Tree\u2019<\/em>\u00a0from 2005 wins as the best\u00a0Fall Out Boy <\/strong>album.<\/p>\n

Take This To Your Grave\u00a0<\/strong>(by Tom White)<\/div>\n

Although not technically Fall Out Boy\u2019s first album (\u2019<\/em>Evening Out With Your Girlfriend\u2019<\/em>\u00a0was their first, yet for some reason often not counted)\u00a0\u2019<\/em>Take This To Your Grave\u2019<\/em>\u00a0shows a band limping their way to maturity with musical passion. It is with these growing pains that \u2018Take This To Your Grave\u2019\u00a0<\/em>concerns itself with and this is why it is my favourite\u00a0Fall Out Boy<\/strong>\u00a0album.<\/p>\n

From opener\u00a0\u2018Tell Mick He Just Made My List Of Things To Do Today,\u2019<\/em>\u00a0there is a nervous and unrefined energy that characterises this album and unlike later releases, it is a highly relatable record of teenage angst. The lyrics are full of spite and truth, a trademark of all of Fall Out Boy\u2019s records but especially evident here.<\/p>\n

Songs like\u00a0\u2018Grenade Jumper\u2019<\/em>\u00a0show a band that are having fun with their music also, and this is a side that is rarely seen in the poker-faced and grandiose \u2018Infinity<\/em>\u00a0On High.\u2019<\/em>There is also a certain sense of intimacy to songs like\u00a0\u2018Grand Theft Autumn\u2019<\/em>\u00a0which makes them all the more relatable. There is also the small matter of these songs having the catchiest hooks in pop-punk music, perhaps ever.<\/p>\n

Whilst I am not claiming that success tainted the enjoyment of the likes of \u2018Sugar, We\u2019re Going Down\u2019\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0\u2019<\/em>Dance, Dance\u2019\u00a0<\/em>there is an extent to which these \u201chits\u201d are irritatingly over-familiar. The amount they have been overplayed on radio, TV and in clubs is truly frustrating. In comparison,\u00a0\u2018Take This To Your Grave\u2019<\/em>\u00a0sounds personal and unspoilt. Tracks like\u00a0\u2018The Patron Saint of Liars and Fakes\u2019<\/em>\u00a0still feel fresh despite being older. The album also feels more like a \u201cproper album\u201d which is perhaps not true of\u00a0\u2019<\/em>Folie A Deux\u2019\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0\u2019<\/em>Infinity On High\u2019\u00a0<\/em>which at times feels bitty, pieced together and over-produced.<\/p>\n

Overall,\u00a0\u2019<\/em>Take This To Your Grave\u2019\u00a0<\/em>remains my favourite\u00a0Fall Out Boy<\/strong>\u00a0record due to its\u2019 lasting earnestness and the sheer amount of hooky pop-punk classics on the album.\u00a0<\/p>\n

From Under The Cork Tree<\/strong>\u00a0(by Michael Brown)<\/p>\n

This is it. This is where\u00a0Fall Out Boy<\/strong> absolutely nailed it. So much so that this is where their reputation grew and grew. Still, it\u2019s no surprise; at least this album proves that there are plenty of people in the world who still know a good album when they hear one.<\/p>\n

And why is that? Well, I guess this album has got more of a pop vibe to it. It\u2019s still pop punk, but there\u2019s certainly big hitters on there, or singles<\/em> as the big music honchos over in music business land would call them. Yeah, you know them. If you didn\u2019t hear \u2018Dance, Dance\u2019<\/em> or \u2018Suger, We\u2019re Going Down\u2019\u00a0<\/em>back in 2005 then you probably weren\u2019t alive. For many of our generation they\u2019re filled with an absolute bucket load of nostalgia and that certainly helps stamp an album into memories passed.<\/p>\n

Heading straight into \u2018Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner\u2019\u00a0<\/em>we start to understand what consistency is all about. Each song on this album could\u2019ve been a single, potentially. There\u2019s enough hooks in this album that it\u2019s hard to\u00a0not<\/em> remember most of the words. The lyrics are the transcript of so many teenage minds, cementing it more so into that teenage mindset and all the nostalgia that sticks with it. I mean, they\u2019re pretty clever but deep lyrics throughout and Mr Patrick Stump delivers them so fantastically. Surely he\u2019s one of the best singers within pop punk?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s pop punk with a heavy dose of pop. It is, let\u2019s not deny it. Who doesn\u2019t like pop though? Pop is popular, that\u2019s kind of the point of it. It makes this album accesible to a wider audience which is great for the band and to your friends as well. I\u2019m sure I\u2019m not the only one who has friends that aren\u2019t into the same kind of music, but it\u2019s albums like this that help to blur those boundaries and help bring your friends over to where the real talent lies.<\/p>\n

Thank\u00a0Fall Out Boy<\/strong> for making an absolute landmark in pop punk. It\u2019s got the lyrics, it\u2019s got the hooks and it\u2019s even got singing that\u2019s actually real good! Keep it on this summer, rain or shine.<\/p>\n
