\"\"Citing influences such as Nirvana, Led Zepplin and At The Drive-In, Just Like Vinyl<\/strong> sounds like an interesting bunch and with Thomas Erak formerly of The Fall of Troy taking lead, it’s no surprise ‘Black Mass’<\/em> is a combination\u00a0of ridiculous guitar riffs and controlled melodies. Nevertheless despite this those who have hopes that this The Fall of Troy Version 2.0 may be slightly disappointed.<\/p>\n

Whilst early tracks like ‘Safety Word’<\/em> and ‘Bitches Get Stitches’<\/em> have that same intense, sparodic sound that made TFOT so appealing, Just Like Vinyl have taken a more focused approach with the latter showing Erak’s singing ability rather than the all out screaming that we’re used to. He brings a slight sense of theatre with his vocals as it soars alongside crunching guitars.<\/p>\n

However ‘Hours And Whiskey Sours’<\/em> and ‘Sucks To Be You’<\/em> offers a more chaotic approach with crippling guitars and intense drum work. ‘ATM’<\/em> is another example of this and to be honest the frantic fingerwork leaves you amazed but you have to appreciate their direction to a\u00a0rhythm-centred sound.<\/p>\n

The highlight is ‘Walk You Home’<\/em> which sees a guest spot from Twin Atlantic’s Sam McTrusty. It showcases the bands ability to write melodic rock songs with a heavy edge but a steady tempo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Admittedly on first listen ‘Black Mass’<\/em> doesn’t quite grab you and sounds slightly incoherent. It’s a challenging record that at times fails to keep your attention, yet it offers variation. In places its edgy-yet-melodic, whilst elsewhere it’s dark, bitter and sludgy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Whilst Erak and company may not shake off The Fall of Troy comparison, it’s clear Just Like Vinyl are a confident band with ideas and have the musical talent to expand these ideas.<\/p>\n
