\"\"Gruff, fast and pop. Equally fitting of an unlikely brand of cereal,\u00a0<\/span>these qualitatives also conveniently fit Brighton punk outfit\u00a0<\/span>Gnarwolves<\/span><\/strong>. EP ‘CRU’<\/em> is a showcase of the warm-hearted aggression they\u00a0<\/span>wear on their sleeve through half a dozen fast-paced and rowdy tracks\u00a0<\/span>of pop-punk goodness. The band find their spot somewhere between the\u00a0<\/span>songwriting of early Against Me! combined with a style along the lines\u00a0<\/span>of Basement, a cocktail that surely has a bunch of people foaming at\u00a0<\/span>the mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Opener ‘History Is Bunk’ is a short, sweet and triumphant blast as it\u00a0<\/span>sprints out of the starting blocks all crashing cymbals and raucous\u00a0<\/span>guitars before cutting with an effortless suddenness into a rousing\u00a0<\/span>chorus of gang vocals as they iterate again and again that ‘it’s not\u00a0<\/span>the same thing’. All credit should be due to the superb songwriting on\u00a0<\/span>display here as ‘We Want The Whip’ is another little gem that sees the\u00a0<\/span>band weave shouty verses with charming choruses ready to be shouted\u00a0<\/span>back at the band.<\/span><a href=“http:\/\/music.tangledtalk.com\/album\/cru” data-mce-href=“http:\/\/music.tangledtalk.com\/album\/cru”>CRU by Gnarwolves<\/a><\/p>\n

The band show a little variety with ‘Community, Stability, Identity’<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>in which they make the most of a slower tempo by playing with an\u00a0<\/span>off-kilter fragility before bringing the house down (and the rest of\u00a0<\/span>the neighbourhood). ‘A Gram Is Better Than A Damn’<\/em> might come off as a\u00a0<\/span>little lackluster in comparison to the rest of the EP, \u00a0as might ‘Oh,\u00a0<\/em><\/span>Brave New World’<\/em> though the latter has a fingerful of its own moments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Closer ‘Coffee’,<\/em> though, serves as a good summary of the band’s style\u00a0<\/span>with a display of both the irreverent pace of their uncompromising\u00a0<\/span>pop-infused gruff-punk and some of the more exciting additions they\u00a0<\/span>complement the former with (in this case, the enforcing of a\u00a0<\/span>deliberate, sluggish pace with the affirming statement of “I’ll sleep\u00a0<\/em><\/span>when I’m old”<\/em>).\u00a0<\/span>Gnarwolves<\/span>\u00a0are fresh, exciting and immediate and ‘CRU’<\/em><\/span>
is their best introduction.<\/span><\/p>\n
