From amusing early artwork to several commendable DIY videos, the quartet are clearly enjoying making music. Can that always be said of the arena-filling titans?<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018Last In, First Out\u2019<\/i> is the second EP release from the band in 2016, and they continue to cut their teeth with a lively &#8211; if unabashedly derivative &#8211; melodic alternative rock sound. April\u2019s self-proclaimed \u2018mini-album\u2019, <i>\u2018In A Week, On A Whim\u2019<\/i>, delivered five tales of teenage angst and rainy-day musings that hardly explored new ground, but introduced <b>Chisel Beeches<\/b> as more than capable of producing a solid tune. <i>\u2018Last In, First Out\u2019<\/i> follows largely the same sonic blueprint, and moves to address slightly more grown-up troubles.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>The most immediate track is opener <i>\u2018Friday Night\u2019s A Lie\u2019<\/i>, its sharp melodies combining with just the right amount of \u2018heavy\u2019. Lyrically it is a familiar tale of the <i>\u2018long queues and spinning rooms\u2019<\/i> of underwhelming nightclubs, and a girl who makes it all bearable. Meanwhile, <i>\u2018V.I.P.\u2019<\/i> is surely the first song to address the pitfalls of falling for a <i>\u2018horny girl\u2019<\/i> who exists only in scam emails. It\u2019s refreshing to find genuine amusement in alternative music, and many a po-faced, leather-jacketed band out there should take note.<\/p>\n<p>Humour aside, <i>\u2018Never Know\u2019<\/i> is evidence of a keen ear for a chorus and a confidence to mix up time signatures. <i>\u2018You Know I\u2019m Right\u2019<\/i> also alternates between 4\/4 and &frac34; time, and the band have revealed that the two songs offer contrasting perspectives on the same tale of an unhealthy love affair.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s this lyrical inventiveness and penchant for storytelling that <b>Chisel Beeches<\/b> should hold onto at all costs.
