\nEveryone loves a bit of nostalgia and tonight\u2019s trio of Hell Is For Heroes<\/b>, A<\/b> and Vex Red<\/b> is the perfect mix for those want a dose of early 2000s Brit Rock. Tonight \u2018The Neon Handshake 15th Anniversary\u2019<\/i> tour arrives in Nottingham.<\/p>\nAldershot\u2019s Vex Red<\/b> open the night to a steadily growing crowd. While they were vaguely hyped up 15 or so years ago, they never quite took off yet they\u2019re the only band who are currently active having reunited in 2016. Their brand of rock with hints of electronica and grunge is pleasing enough, setting the nostalgic tone for the rest of the evening. Songs such as \u2018The Closest\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Itch\u2019<\/i> are warmly received by the crowd but lack a lasting impression. Nevertheless \u2018Can\u2019t Smile\u2019<\/i> does wake up a section of the crowd up. (3\/5)<\/p>\n

For starters, they have a Top Ten UK single in their arsenal, yet they\u2019re keen to show they are more than a one-hit wonder. There\u2019s instantly an upbeat energy with guest bassist Dougie Poynter (of McFly fame) bouncing around the stage. As for vocalist Jason Perry, his slightly hoarse vocals aren\u2019t the best yet the skate punk-influenced tempo of songs like \u2018Bad Idea\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Monkey King\u2019<\/i> make up it. While A<\/b>\u2019s \u201cother hit\u201d, \u2018Starbucks\u2019<\/i> provides the first singalong of the evening.<\/p>\n
In between songs, Perry acknowledges his age and ahead of playing \u2018No. 1\u2019<\/i>, states \u201cthis might be a bit shit\u201d<\/i>. Whereas Poynter comments that Perry is the man to blame \u201cif you think McFly are shit.\u201d As they soldier through \u2018Something\u2019s Going On\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Foghorn\u2019<\/i>, it\u2019s evident A<\/b> haven\u2019t lost their youthful pop-punk spirit. By the time they end with \u2018Nothing\u2019<\/i> (of course), Perry\u2019s vocals show improvement while Poynter alongside guitarist Mark Chapman add some heavy drive to the finish their set off with. (3.5\/5)<\/p>\n
<\/p>\nFor a band that hasn\u2019t been active for close to a decade, it seems many people have missed Hell Is For Heroes<\/b>. Maybe it\u2019s the nostalgia that\u2019s the attraction but HIFH<\/b> are giving a rousing welcome as they walk on stage. From the moment they kick off with \u2018Five Kids Go\u2019<\/i> it\u2019s clear that the quintet hasn\u2019t missed a step, delivering a tight-knit set full of urgency. While Justin Schlosberg\u2019s vocals are as strong as they were 15 years ago as loosely moves across the stage. \u201cIt\u2019s good to be back in the city of rock,\u201d<\/i> proclaims Schlosberg.<\/p>\n
By the time they reach the midway album pairing of \u2018Three of Clubs\u2019<\/i> and juggernaut classic \u2018I Can Climb Mountains\u2019<\/i>, Schlosberg is crowd surfing and doing cartwheels on stage. While he leads the enthralling crowd through \u2018You Drove Me To It\u2019<\/i>. Yet it\u2019s not all about the frontman as his bandmates replicate ‘The Neon Handshake\u2019<\/i> note-perfect, capturing spirited drive.<\/p>\n
Before they end \u2018The Neon Handshake\u2019<\/i> portion of their set with album closer, ‘Retreat\u2019<\/i>, Schlosberg teases a possible return making us think new material might be in the works. Nevertheless, an encore of three post-\u2018Neon Handshake\u2019<\/i> songs, the sonically stunning \u2018To Die For\u2019<\/i>, \u2018Into The Blood\u2019<\/i> and fiery closer \u2018Folded Paper Figures\u2019, along with their own unique spin on The Cure\u2019s ‘Boys Don\u2019t Cry\u2019<\/i> end the night of an appreciative note.<\/p>\n
While some bands of yesteryear might not give it their all, Hell Is For Heroes<\/b> exceed expectations. Whether it\u2019s just a passing return or the start of a new chapter is yet to be seen. Either way, tonight is a firm reminder of Hell Is For Heroes<\/b>\u2019s achievements. (4.5\/5)<\/p>\n
