Recalling the likes of Balance and Composure and Turnover, the oh-so-short four-track EP won them a solid fanbase, meaning there\u2019s an air of expectation around <i>\u2018A Glimpse of Self Joy&rsquo;<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, if there was any pressure, it\u2019s not apparent. <i>\u2018A Glimpse of Self Joy\u2019<\/i> is a powerful emo\/indie-rock album that builds upon the group\u2019s early promise, delivering a striking and confident full-length that sees the quartet push into new musical territories.<\/p>\n<p>Built around a narrative of a poisonous relationship, <i>\u2018A Glimpse of Self Joy\u2019<\/i> is something of a difficult lyrical listen, carried by Scottie Noonan\u2019s crisp vocals. <i>\u201cI\u2019m sick of carrying your shit,\u201d<\/i> he pleads on <i>\u2018We\u2019re Caving In\u201d<\/i>. It could have sounded melodramatic, but is instead a powerful and moving moment in an album packed with many similarly striking insights.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>Musically, <i>\u2018A Glimpse of Self Joy\u2019<\/i> is similarly taut \u2013 and a huge step up on <i>\u2018Intertwined With You\u2019<\/i>. Hooks are insidious, often half-obscured by light and shade, while the songs ebb and flow brilliantly. They\u2019re a smart bunch too; a wonderful rolling drum beat builds to a powerful crescendo on <i>\u2018Late Night Swim\u2019<\/i> before intense, half-screamed vocals kick in. It\u2019s cleverly-constructed stuff that pushes and pulls you along the narrative perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a nice switch of tempo too; At 12 songs and nearly 40 minutes long, <i>\u2018A Glimpse of Self Joy\u2019<\/i> could have been a test, certainly considering the lyrical themes, but tracks like <i>\u2018Forest Eyes\u2019<\/i> and  <i>\u2018Color Coded\u2019<\/i> flip from injecting much needed pace to moments of quiet introspection.<\/p>\n<p>It means <i>\u2018A Glimpse of Self Joy\u2019<\/i> is an arresting and powerful album, filled with mature and relevant themes.
