After the divisive but brilliant <i>\u2018Path of Totality\u2019<\/i>, a creative spark was reignited in the band which, combined with the reunion with Brian \u2018Head\u2019 Welch on guitar resulted in the anthemic <i>\u2018Paradigm Shift\u2019.<\/i> So, will twelfth album <i>\u2018The Serenity of Suffering\u2019<\/i> be the home run we\u2019re looking for?<\/p>\n<p>After promising to sound <i>&ldquo;heavier than anyone\u2019s heard them in a while,&rdquo;<\/i> the Bakersfield godfather\u2019s don\u2019t hesitate to show their chops off on opener <i>\u2018Insane\u2019<\/i>. Throwing up a stomping groove, the album immediately feels grittier and more distorted than their past two releases.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>From here, the intensity is turned up for lead single <i>\u2018Rotting in Vain\u2019<\/i>, where James \u2018Munky\u2019 Shaffer\u2019s claustrophobic guitar closes in on listeners before Jonathan Davis\u2019 trademark scat centrepiece explodes with a pandemonium akin to being caught in the middle of a hurricane. This erratic energy continues on <i>\u2018Everything Falls Apart\u2019<\/i> where the tempo is increased amid Davis\u2019 repetition of <i>\u2018There is nothing in my head,<\/i>\u2019 resulting in a soundscape of true panic.<\/p>\n<p>The darkness flowing across <i>\u2018The Serenity of Suffering\u2019<\/i> recalls 2010\u2019s flawed <i>\u2018Remember Who You Are\u2019<\/i>, where <b>Korn<\/b> tried to recreate the anxiety of their early records in an unauthentic fashion. But here, tracks like <i>\u2018A Different World\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2018When You\u2019re Not There\u2019<\/i> carry a nihilism which oozes through every single second.
