\nThere are many for whom 17 years has been time enough to wait for a follow-up to American Football<\/b>\u2019s 1999\u2019s debut (also self-titled). But, while an increasing fandom in the intervening years has seen the group\u2019s stock soar, the possibility of new material has remained distant and vague even after 2014\u2019s reformation.<\/p>\n

Yet, perhaps buoyed by the success of the reformation \u2013 and certainly bolstered by the addition of Nate Kinsella on bass \u2013 here we are, with American Football<\/b> once again set to wow a new generation with a new album that feels just as poised and perfect as their timing.<\/p>\n

\u2018American Football\u2019<\/i> (2) retains a similar dynamic to its predecessor \u2013 built around the amazing guitar work of Steve Holmes and Mike Kinsella; beautiful clean tones form the perfect layer for Kinsella\u2019s cool indie-rock vocal. Backed by the impressive beats of drummer (and trumpeter) Steve Lamos, tracks like \u2018My Instincts Are the Enemy\u2019<\/i> are a pleasure to play again and again.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is the sound of a band with plenty to reflect on in the two decades since they first made music together, and comfortably at ease in the studio \u2013 the sounds are effortlessly warm and clear \u2013 everything has its place. Tracks like \u2018Give Me the Gun\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Desire Gets in the Way\u2019<\/i> demonstrate the fluidity with which the four musicians gel; there\u2019s no need for overly-produced sounds and arrangements that plagued the output of bands that emerged in their wake.<\/p>\n

Kinsella says it best on album opener \u2018Where Are We Now\u2019<\/i> \u2013 \u201cWe\u2019ve been here before but I don\u2019t remember a lock on the door.\u201d<\/i> They\u2019re at their best when looking backwards \u2013 perhaps the same is true for all of us?<\/p>\n

American Football<\/b> have delivered a stunning second album that was worth the wait and deserves to occupy the upper tiers of the end-year lists, as well as your music collection.<\/p>\n
