\"\"\u2018Easycore\u2019 took on a life of it\u2019s own somewhere after the turn of the decade, when A Day to Remember\u2019s commercial success encouraged a lot of imitators to combine aggression with sing-alongs. But with so many different bands trying variations of this theme, who\u2019d have thought it would take until 2016 for I Prevail<\/b> to make the archetypal easycore album with \u2018Lifelines\u2019<\/i>?<\/p>\n

Crafting stratospheric hooks guaranteed to stick in your head is a prime feature of the songwriting, and the Michigan sextet are very good at this throughout. This is showcased as soon as \u2018Scars\u2019\u2019<\/i> chorus is hammered out the traps, as Dylan Bowman\u2019s chunky guitar tone provides melodic slabs born to be played in bouncing arenas.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

They aren\u2019t the first metalcore group to let profitable hard rock influence their songwriting. Beartooth can balance on the line between moshpit and wrestling ring music, but much of \u2018Lifelines\u2019<\/i> takes cues from angsty radio rock, felt in \u2018Outcasts\u2019\u2019<\/i> attention seeking cries of \u201cFuck your futures, fuck your rumours, we\u2019re everything you never thought we\u2019d be,\u201d<\/i> and \u2018Already Dead\u2019<\/i>s refrain of \u201cI\u2019ll bring you back to life and then I\u2019ll kill you again\u201d<\/i>, delivered with a machismo that becomes laughable after remembering this group rose to prominence by covering Taylor Swift.<\/p>\n

When I Prevail<\/b> try going sentimental, the impact actually feels restricted by the extent of over-production on this album. Vocalist Brian Burkheiser\u2019s delivery on ballads \u2018Alone\u2019<\/i> and \u2018My Heart to Surrender\u2019<\/i> feels held back with his voice hidden behind layers of synthesisation reducing any personal connection.<\/p>\n

Ultimately \u2018Lifelines\u2019<\/i> could be satisfying if you\u2019re looking for a set of catchy songs to mindlessly move your head to, but that\u2019s it. It\u2019s as deep as a paddling pool, has lyrics targeted at an impressionable youth and is devoid of any unique personality. If I Prevail<\/b> have made the ultimate easycore album, give us something more challenging.<\/p>\n
