Last years <em>\u2018More Alive\u2019<\/em> EP benefited from being produced by Ryan Key (Yellowcard) and Chad Gilbert (New Found Glory) and have even made the occasional Warped Tour appearance. However, all these credentials mean nothing without the product to prove themselves. Thankfully, their latest release \u2018Better Health\u2019 is the band\u2019s best attempt at unlocking their potential to date.<\/p>\n<p>Building on from the momentum of <em>\u2018More Alive\u2019<\/em>, this second effort,\u00a0<em>&#8216;<i>Better Health&#8217;<\/i>,<\/em> has the merit of presenting itself as a more considered release. The heart-on-sleeve approach is evident from the off, as the splintering guitars on<em> \u2019Detached\u2019<\/em> introduce a relaxed, inviting tone. It\u2019s not long before <em>\u2018Mutual Interest\u2019<\/em> picks up the pace. With the songs introspective vocals and shimmering chords, it quickly defines itself as a standout, not only on the EP but for the band themselves.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Weekend Classic - Mutual Interest (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F_RKaJbJ5ZE?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As you listen on through the EP, automatic comparisons to bands such as Knuckle Puck or Real Friends spring to mind. What really ties this release into the world of Midwestern pop-punk though is the references to heartbreak. In the piercing ballad, <em>\u2018Room To Grow\u2019<\/em>, the well-mixed guitars give way to the lamenting refrains tinged with pain. The EP is littered with red-letter moments, like how the band\u2019s boyish tones bring together songs like<em> \u2018Cut Me Off\u2019<\/em> or<em> \u2018Daydream\u2019<\/em>. However, the real star of the show are those guitar-driven melodies that are clearly the heart of this band\u2019s sound. It is 90\u2019s alternative elements like these that, instead of feeling recycled, come through as hazy but lovable.<\/p>\n<p>With only two EPs out in the world, <strong>The Weekend Classic<\/strong> have a great foundation with this melodically sound EP that flows together so well.
