This album is, hostile and willing to journey listeners down vast rabbit holes of ambience and prog-metal extravagance.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a complete departure from the throat-punching band we\u2019ve known up to this point, as opener <i>\u2018Swarm\u2019<\/i> forcefully demonstrates via scattergun instrumentation juddering in unpredictable time-signatures like a bullet bouncing off the bars in a metal cage. Plus, the dense opening to <i>\u2018Coalesce\u2019<\/i> is easily the heaviest moment of their back catalogue up to now.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Palm Reader - Swarm\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0v_m0B8gHJk?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>More importantly, this album is about <b>Palm Reader\u2019s<\/b> metamorphosis into a bolder, more affluent-sounding outfit. Guitarist Andy Gillan\u2019s love for Mastodon inspires the luminous leads that open <i>\u2018Inertia\u2019<\/i>, while sweeping choruses in <i>\u2018Internal Winter\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2018The Turn\u2019<\/i> are built on concrete rhythm sections that demand your undivided attention. This is also achieved by frontman Josh McKeown\u2019s increased confidence, particularly in the use of clean vocals, resulting in a more vulnerable, dimensional performance.<\/p>\n<p><b>Palm Reader<\/b> have always shone as more ambitious than a lot of artists on their playing field, and on <i>\u2018Braille\u2019<\/i> that ambition is put into full effect. It\u2019s a record that demands patience, focus and an emotional resonance greater than a release of energy.
