Sharing stages with Our Hollow, Our Home, Create to Inspire and Holding Absence off the back of their debut EP <i>\u2018We Were Once Lost\u2019<\/i>, they can be nicely painted onto the expanding canvas of the British melodic hardcore resurgence.<\/p>\n<p>Second EP <i>\u2018A Conscious Motion\u2019<\/i> is an ambitious follow-up with a more dimensional approach to songwriting than it\u2019s predecessor\u2019s verse-chorus-gang-vocals affair. It opens dramatically with <i>\u2018Coincide:Collide\u2019<\/i> as a buildup of clattering drumsticks, booming bass and snaking guitar patterns in its verses points to more confident musicianship within the Kent quintet.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Cove - Coincide:Collide\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v-6511uk-6E?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>Their understanding of restraint is also more apparent on this EP. The delicate guitar pattering in the verses of <i>\u2018All I Believe\u2019<\/i> briefly apprehends the song\u2019s pandemonium, before rewarding anxious listeners by releasing avalanches of thick metallic riffs into its chorus. This switching dynamic often compliments vocalist Ben Shorten\u2019s lyrical traits, which verge between nihilistic self-loathing (<i>\u201cLost in dark, I forget how the light tastes, dreams coincide and collide into nothing\u201d<\/i>) and a rage lunged directly at the people around him (<i>\u201cHow can you live like this, blinded by ignorance, how can you live like this, it\u2019s what\u2019s making you sick\u201d<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Comparisons to Architects and Northlane will be inevitable for <b>Cove<\/b>, but for a band on their second EP, <i>\u2018A Conscious Motion\u2019<\/i> is a seriously impressive effort. It builds from the standard hardcore tropes of <i>\u2018We Were Once Lost\u2019<\/i> and achieves that difficult balance of keeping listeners in suspense, while providing a hearty outlet for all moshing needs.
