Whilst they blend various forms of emo, lo-fi and post-rock, it\u2019s somewhat hard to pinpoint exactly how they stand out from the many other experimental indie bands in the DIY\/Bandcamp scene. Especially those signed to Exploding In Sound.<\/p>\n<p>If there was one defining way to describe <b>Jouska<\/b>\u2019s song structures, it would be meandering. Opener <i>\u2018calico\u2019<\/i> starts off with melancholic textures, as frontperson Doug Dulgarian proclaims <em>\u201cwe don\u2019t talk anymore\u201d<\/em> before the full band spring into action with an explosive ending. Unfortunately, it feels like they chose their strongest song first, leaving the rest of the EP feeling somewhat empty.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Jouska - tummy\/legs\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-m5eAlFpQiE?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another trope in the Bandcamp indie rock scene is a tendency for the vocals to be drowned in reverb, that try to come across as introspective, but unfortunately end up sounding bland in their delivery. On <em>\u2018tummy\/legs\u2019<\/em>, we get dashes of Pile and Foxing sounding elements. And, as far apart as those bands are from each other, it makes for an interesting contrast. This adds somewhat of an uncomfortable feeling as the track trundles along, before sneaking up on the listener with an impactful array of abrasive riffs.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that\u2019s all <em>\u2018from Elson to Emmett\u2019<\/em> really is though, a vague curiosity that doesn\u2019t manage to hook listeners in the same way <em>\u2018topiary\u2019<\/em> did. Closer <em>\u2018swill\u2019<\/em> in particular doesn\u2019t feel finished and comes across as half-baked.
