Three albums deep without building beyond a small but loyal fanbase, he may be forgiven for accepting that things will never change.<\/p>\n<p>But Greenwood clearly knows how to write a punk rock song, and the tracks on <i>\u2019Keep Bleeding\u2019<\/i> are solid if not spectacular. One suspects that this was <b>The Doublecross<\/b>&rsquo; aim all along, yet intelligent melodies cut through a relentless backdrop of crisp, smoothly-produced guitar attacks and basic rhythms. It\u2019s a sound that satisfies and frustrates in equal measure, and any album recorded by a three-piece in under ten days will always feel rushed, to a certain degree.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>The opening salvo of <i>\u2019One More Time\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2019My Only Friends Are Chemicals\u2019<i> is a punchy introduction and the latter offers the first glimpse of Greenwood\u2019s ability as a sharp lyricist &#8211; <i>&ldquo;I\u2019m talking to myself every night &#8211; &quot;Yeah, are you ok man?\u201d \u201dI\u2019m doing fine\u201d\u201d.<\/i> Both also pack a catchy chorus and an energy that subsides somewhat on <i>\u2019Fireworks And Butterflies\u2019<\/i>, a lead single that could have been an early Foo Fighters throwaway. Self-evident clich\u00e9s grate on <i>\u2019She Might Be The One\u2019<\/i>, but <i>\u2019Bad Dreams\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2019The Wire\u2019<\/i> thankfully restore riffs and hooks of which a teenage Billie Joe Armstrong would be proud.<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>For the most part, the later tracks here are the weakest on offer. Yet fillers <i>\u2018Hurt People Hurt People\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2018Forever Pretending To Sleep\u2019<\/i> give way to the best song on the album. <i>\u2018The Lake\u2019<\/i> is a startlingly sparse Kelly Jones-esque ballad that shows Greenwood\u2019s true ability for the first time. Over a lone guitar, the cigs-and-booze voice sounds like it might just be about to break as he delivers the stunning line: <i>&quot;She loves me more than I love myself\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>On this evidence, <b>The Doublecross<\/b> remain frustratingly inconsistent.
