Having ramped up the heaviness on 2013\u2019s superb <i>\u2018Fortress\u2019<\/i>, the band are back with its follow up, <i>&lsquo;The Last Hero&rsquo;<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>Based solely on initial singles <i>\u2018Show Me A Leader\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2018My Champion\u2019<\/i>, it would appear that the band have opted for a more upbeat, palatable sound. While there\u2019s nothing particularly bad about either track, <i>\u2018My Champion\u2019<\/i> in particular feels just a little too sanded down and smoothed in order to appease the radio rock masses.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>However, these songs merely represent a facet of <i>&#8216;The Last Hero<\/i>\u2019s sound, as it occupies a slew of different moods through its thirteen tracks. <i>\u2019Writings On The Wall\u2019<\/i> showcases a more technical approach to the band\u2019s more metallic leanings, and is an immediate standout both in the context of this record and the band\u2019s wider catalogue. This sonic beefiness manifests itself once again in the lumbering menace of <i>\u2018The Other Side\u2019<\/i>; a frequent champion of contemporary artists such as Periphery and Animals As Leaders, Mark Tremonti\u2019s low tuned guitar work brings an element of modernity that many of the band\u2019s peers so often fail to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>It almost goes without saying that Myles Kennedy\u2019s vocals are the star of the show. Sounding more accomplished than ever before, Kennedy demonstrates both incredible range and emotion, particularly on more sentimental tracks <i>\u2018Cradle To Grave\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2018You Will Be Remembered\u2019<\/i>.
