After a handful of well received singles and two cult smash full-lengths, it felt like Joyce Manor<\/b> joined the \u2018A\u2019 league with 2014\u2019s outstanding \u2018Never Hungover Again\u2019<\/i>. Now, figuratively speaking, there\u2019s money in the bank, allowing Joyce Manor<\/b> to push themselves and their musical boundaries.<\/p>\n

\u2019Cody\u2019<\/i> very much represents this flexing of musical muscle, and while it may lack the punch of \u2018Never Hungover Again\u2019<\/i> it also includes some of the quartet\u2019s most rounded and infectiously spiky pop songs to date. Credit must go to producer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Saves The Day, Kevin Devine) for softening some of Joyce Manor<\/b>\u2019s more caustic edges, and his unbelievable ear for texture and pacing is put to good use throughout, ensuring Joyce Manor<\/b> sound better than ever. Take the glorious \u2018Angel in the Snow\u2019<\/i>, for example; a wonderful indie-pop song that\u2019s lusher than anything the band has produced previously. <\/p>\n

And it\u2019s this expansion of sounds and broadening of horizons that is most prevalent on \u2018Cody\u2019<\/i>. \u2018Do You Really Want To Get Better\u2019<\/i> might by the most sparse song the group has ever written. Previously it could have sounded scratchy and raw, yet here it sounds so achingly beautiful it could make you dissolve into an emotional puddle. <\/p>\n

For those yearning for the more frenzied days of \u2018Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired\u2019<\/i> or Joyce Manor<\/b>\u2019s self-titled debut, have no fear though. \u2018Cody\u2019<\/i> still possesses some buzzsaw sharp pop songs. The opening salvo of \u2018Fake I.D.\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Eighteen\u2019<\/i> will leave you grinning from ear-to-ear, while the standout \u2018Stairs\u2019<\/i>, an epic (for Joyce Manor<\/b> at least) four-minutes, shows that when they take their classic sound long-form they can still deliver a killer hit.<\/p>\n

It all means \u2018Cody\u2019<\/i> is yet another triumph for Joyce Manor<\/b>. It might lack the raw serrated edges of \u2018Never Hungover Again\u2019<\/i>, but is no worse for it. Instead, it\u2019s to Joyce Manor<\/b>\u2019s immense credit that they\u2019ve developed from one of the most entertaining, if one-dimensional, indie-punk bands into a band that transcends such genre tags and limitations. Yet what\u2019s most remarkable is that they\u2019ve achieved this without compromise. \u2018Cody\u2019<\/i> still sounds like a traditional Joyce Manor<\/b> record \u2013 just better written, better performed and better produced. <\/p>\n
