Of course, selecting just ten albums is nigh on impossible, but we feel you won\u2019t go far wrong with this ten of the best.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations Matt and Darcie Lunsford and all at team PV, and Happy Birthday Polyvinyl!<\/p>\n<p>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/user\/alreadyhearduk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Follow us on Spotify for more playlists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/07407e57f85fc6b31ac78abcc372c44c\/tumblr_odpfk8d86E1r8no6so1_1280.jpg\" width=\"150em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">American Football \u2013 American Football<\/h2>\n<p>Probably the best example of word of mouth success in the internet age, <b>American Football<\/b>\u2019s growth is testament to the fact that great music will always find an audience. Mike Kinsella often seems bemused at the enduring popularity of <b>American Football<\/b>\u2019s 1999 self-titled debut, yet there\u2019s no doubt it has created a monstrous legacy. Gorgeously arranged and layered with light and shade, it\u2019s a wonderfully airy record that still delights to this day. Ostensibly a studio project, a reunion in 2014 saw the group take to the stage on a mammoth world tour, while next month the band will be releasing their first new material in 16 years. We cannot wait\u2026<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/3ec411349a007fea7188dcc77ad3ca50\/tumblr_odpfelyGY71r8no6so10_1280.jpg\" width=\"150em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">Beach Slang \u2013 The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to two killer EPs and a must-see live show, there was already a considerable buzz about <b>Beach Slang<\/b> ahead of their debut. Yet, at the time, the decision to release on <b>Polyvinyl<\/b> \u2013 a label which has diversified greatly since its indie-rock roots \u2013 came a little out of left-field. In hindsight it is a winning combination, with <b>Beach Slang<\/b> far exceeding already lofty expectations with an album packed with positivity and some of the most infectious, life-affirming, indie-punk songs this side of Japandroids\u2019 <i>\u2018Celebration Rock\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/2c97e45709ebe34b9ccea342b1c7c35e\/tumblr_odpfelyGY71r8no6so5_1280.jpg\" width=\"150em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">Braid \u2013 Frame &amp; Canvas<\/h2>\n<p>One of <b>Polyvinyl<\/b>\u2019s first breakout successes, <i>\u2018Frame &amp; Canvas\u2019<\/i> helped put the label on the map as well as helping to crystallise the Midwest emo sound. Formed by Bob Nanna, with co-vocalist Chris Broach joining shortly after, Braid had pretty much nailed their sound by the time they released their third album, 1998\u2019s <i>\u2018Frame &amp; Canvas\u2019<\/i>. Just one year later the band would call it quits (until a reunion more than a decade later). Consequently, at the time, few people got to see <b>Braid<\/b> perform the songs off <i>\u2018Frame &amp; Canvas\u2019<\/i> live, helping to build the legacy and mystique of an album which has remained enduringly popular \u2013 and influential \u2013 to this day.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/9596824579bef0c1e07af656fe17f100\/tumblr_odpfelyGY71r8no6so4_1280.jpg\" width=\"150em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">Japandroids \u2013 Celebration Rock<\/h2>\n<p><i>\u2018Celebration Rock\u2019<\/i> starts with the sound of a firework display, ends with the sound of a firework display and carries on like the soundtrack to a firework display in the intervening 35 minutes. Like the best life-affirming albums <i>\u2018Celebration Rock\u2019<\/i> is essentially one long album about living life with no regrets and the epitome of <b>Japandroids<\/b>\u2019 leave-it-all-on-stage approach to music. Just the right side of over-the-top \u2013 <i>\u201cHitch-hiked to hell and back\u201d<\/i>, just one of the many ostentatious remarks by the Canadian duo \u2013 it\u2019s the sort of album that makes you glad to be alive. It\u2019s an interesting release in the context of <b>Polyvinyl<\/b> too \u2013 certainly more \u2018punk\u2019 than anything they\u2019d done in recent memory, but proof the Lunsfords still have a keen ear for bands that kick ass.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/ad293ea4985d14e0bdd0b76f0b78a519\/tumblr_odpfelyGY71r8no6so3_1280.jpg\" width=\"150em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">Mates of State \u2013 Team Boo<\/h2>\n<p><b>Mates of State<\/b> always felt like a touch of chaos theory on <b>Polyvinyl<\/b>\u2019s serious roster, especially in the pre of Montreal era. They\u2019d already released two albums prior to 2003\u2019s <i>\u2018Team Boo\u2019<\/i>, but it\u2019s on this glorious concoction of keyboard, drums and hyperactive vocals that Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner delivered a high watermark for <b>Polyvinyl<\/b>. The husband and wife duo are utterly charming and entirely captivating throughout, unleashing a riot of yelped vocals, nonsensical lyrics and twisted but hugely infectious pop songs. And, just when you think you\u2019ve got <b>Mates of State<\/b> licked, they drop <i>\u2018Parachutes (Funeral Song)\u2019<\/i> and \u2018An Experiment\u2019, two songs so heartbreakingly beautiful they\u2019ll knock you sideways.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/5957e3bcf091215b232f4a4249ee7e55\/tumblr_odpfelyGY71r8no6so9_1280.jpg\" width=\"150em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">Owen \u2013 At Home With Owen<\/h2>\n<p><b>Owen<\/b>&rsquo;s fourth full length for <b>Polyvinyl<\/b>, 2006\u2019s excellent <i>&lsquo;At Home With Owen&rsquo;<\/i>, was a key turning point for Chicago\u2019s Mike Kinsellla. Offering the same biting lyricism as previous efforts, <i>&#8216;At Home With Owen&rsquo;<\/i> also shines thanks to a cleaner production and more sonic experimentation. Vocally, Kinsella had never sounded more charming, but the clean edges in no way compromise the quality of the songs. Lyrically, the album effortlessly bounces from savage honesty to playful irreverence, but is coloured by Kinsella turning 30 and meeting his now wife. A much broader album than anything Kinsella had done previously, <i>\u2018At Home With Owen\u2019<\/i> serves as the bridge between his itinerant youth and settled future.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/a7def78382b5aff3b119e2d173226fa0\/tumblr_odpfelyGY71r8no6so8_1280.jpg\" width=\"150em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">Rainer Maria \u2013 Long Knives Drawn<\/h2>\n<p>While it\u2019s well accepted that emo was male dominated \u2013 and thankfully that\u2019s starting to change \u2013 there was still female representation from bands like the Rocking Horse Winner and Wisconsin\u2019s <b>Rainer Maria<\/b>. Another band to bring initial success to the fledgling <b>Polyvinyl<\/b> label, 2003\u2019s <i>\u2018Long Knives Drawn\u2019<\/i>, the fourth album from Caithlin De Marrais, Kyle Fischer and William Kuehn\u2019s literate indie-rockers, is probably the best of an outstanding discography. <b>Rainer Maria<\/b> reformed in 2014, meaning we can\u2019t wait to potentially hear some new material from the enduringly popular trio soon.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/f65757e69352d84b101b82fb3ee00158\/tumblr_odpfelyGY71r8no6so2_1280.jpg\" width=\"150em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">Saturday Looks Good To Me \u2013 Every Night<\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s something quite magical about the perfect pop record, yet few pop records are as perfect or magical as <b>Saturday Looks Good To Me<\/b>\u2019s <i>\u2018Every Night\u2019<\/i>. Driven by the vision of Fred Thomas, listening to <i>\u2018Every Night\u2019<\/i> is like looking through a kaleidoscope at the pop music of the last 60 years. Duelling boy-girl vocals constantly battle for attention, harmonies soar and melodies fly. In fact, <i>\u2018Every Night\u2019<\/i> is so choc-full of highlights it borders on greed. Yet, no matter how much you gorge, you will never get sick of its charms thanks to the acerbic undercurrent that flows beneath. Combine this with an irreverent heart, bold delivery and astonishing production and you\u2019ve got the winning combination for an album that can make your spirit swell or bring you to the edge of tears at every turn.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/4970599ba160bc18d197434deca9b1cb\/tumblr_odpfelyGY71r8no6so7_1280.jpg\" width=\"150em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin &#8211; Broom<\/h2>\n<p>Journalists are often told to avoid hyperbole, which makes describing <i>\u2018Broom\u2019<\/i> something of a challenge, not least of all as it possesses the single greatest song you\u2019ve likely never heard. Some ten years after its release <i>\u2018I Am Warm &amp; Powerful\u2019<\/i> can still make you feel warm, powerful and a million other things during its oh-so-brief 2:40 run-time. And, while <i>\u2018I Am Warm &amp; Powerful\u2019<\/i> is the jewel, it is so in a sea of glistening gold. <i>\u2018Broom\u2019<\/i> is filled with gorgeous, winsome indie pop, part Shins, part Elliott Smith yet utterly captivating from start to finish.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/cdac412aa6ef287df1b19977d465ace0\/tumblr_odpfelyGY71r8no6so1_500.jpg\" width=\"150em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">Volcano, I\u2019m Still Excited!! \u2013 Volcano, I\u2019m Still Excited!!<\/h2>\n<p>Something of a forgotten gem, <b>Volcano, I\u2019m Still Excited!!<\/b> burned out fast and bright, releasing just a demo EP, a single full-length  and a tour EP before calling it quits. A riot of keyboards \u2013 thanks in part to vocalist Mark Duplass\u2019 chronic tendonitis, which forced him to give up guitar \u2013 <i>\u2018Volcano\u2026\u2019<\/i> is at times wonderfully textured at others maniacally overactive, yet never unfocused. Heralded as a favourite by bands such as Johnny Foreigner, it still stands up to scrutiny today as a visionary piece of musical art. Post V,ISE!!, Duplass found himself as a pioneer of the mumblecore cinema movement. Since then he\u2019s made silver screen gold as director of the excellent <i>\u2018Jeff, Who Lives At Home\u2019<\/i>, producer\/star of the twisted <i>\u2018The One I Love\u2019<\/i> and unhinged weirdo\/possible scientific genius Kenneth Calloway in <i>\u2018Safety Not Guaranteed\u2019<\/i>. All of which seem quite apt when compared to the impudent noise created by <b>Volcano, I\u2019m Still Excited!!<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Honourable Mentions<\/h2>\n<p>The ten albums selected above should all be of interest to Already Heard\u2019s readership, but agreeing on ten essential albums from such an incredibly rich discography is almost impossible.
