{"id":4181,"date":"2016-09-16T13:00:13","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T13:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-god-damn-everything-ever\/"},"modified":"2018-03-21T22:16:02","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:16:02","slug":"album-review-god-damn-everything-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-god-damn-everything-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"Album Review: God Damn &#8211;\u00a0Everything Ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/6535371b44cb9385de9a4ac3092f1879\/tumblr_oczgq9lfGb1r8no6so1_1280.jpg\" width=\"250em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p>Midlands groove monsters <b>God Damn<\/b> remain a consistently thrilling live band; a blur of limbs and hair teamed with music so skull-crushingly loud it could drown out a Boeing on take-off. <\/p>\n<p>As is often the case though, translating that visceral energy from stage to record is a puzzling conundrum; with multiple days in a studio it\u2019s easy to perfect every nuance, removing the edges that come with a leave-it-all-on-stage one-take sweat-fest that is typical of the <b>God Damn<\/b> live experience. <\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, <i>\u2018Everything Ever\u2019<\/i> isn\u2019t sanitised or watered down, even if that studio polish is inescapable. Existing in some post-Motorhead, pre-grunge time-warp, there\u2019s a classic sound to <b>God Damn<\/b>\u2019s relentless aural assault, with cuts like <i>\u2018Again Again\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2018It Bites\u2019<\/i> recalling Soul Asylum (in their early Twin\/Tone days, rather than their chart-bothering middle-age) or Husker D\u00fc at their savage best. While the mid-paced <i>\u2018I\u2019ll Bury You\u2019<\/i> and stomping <i>\u2018Failure\u2019<\/i> come off like sludge-covered takes on any number of early noughties Britrock anthems. <\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s in this ability to subvert and twist their sound that Thom and Ash excel. It\u2019s perhaps easy for two-pieces to find a formula and stick rigidly to it, yet <i>\u2018Everything Ever\u2019<\/i> is an unpredictable and exciting slice of hip-shaking garage punk. At times bleak and dirty, at others frantic and frenzied. <\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s one complaint, a couple of the songs are just too repetitious, going from naggingly infectious to relentlessly nagging; <i>\u2018Dead To Me\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2018Oh No\u2019<\/i> are the main culprits and could well test your sanity as they replay over, and over, and over, and over in your head. That said, their simplicity could make them favourites in a live setting \u2013 which brings us back to the main point. As enjoyable as <i>\u2018Everything Ever\u2019<\/i> is \u2013 and it\u2019s a huge amount of hair-swinging, foot-stomping fun \u2013 it\u2019s just not as much fun as catching <b>God Damn<\/b> live.
