LA blues rock trio Beware Of Darkness<\/b> are the latest to add to the genre\u2019s vast tapestry with their sophomore release, ‘Are You Real?’<\/i>’ The question is, is it worth your time?<\/p>\n

Swaggering out of the traps with \u2018Muthafucka\u2019<\/i>, Beware of Darkness<\/b> immediately establish their hazy, fuzz driven sound – you might have heard it all before, but it\u2019s that much harder to care with a chorus this big.<\/p>\n

For the remainder of \u2019Are You Real?\u2019<\/i>\u2019s first half, the band maintain a standard of songwriting nous: first single \u2019Dope\u2019<\/i>\u2019s falsetto hook is undeniable, while the album\u2019s title track is an awesome combination of subtle atmosphere and trundling bass groove. The instrumental prowess displayed here is elevated further by the vocal performance of Kyle Nicolaides, whose charismatic presence dominates much of this record.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

However, it is at the beginning of the album\u2019s second half that the wheels threaten to fall off. \u2019Angel\u2019<\/i>\u2019s mawkish lyrical content leaves a bad taste in the mouth, while \u2019Surrender\u2019<\/i> and \u2019Hieroglyphics\u2019<\/i> are just far too vanilla to leave any lasting impression.<\/p>\n

In spite of this lull, \u2019Are You Real?\u2019<\/i> closes on a high note with the understated lethargy of \u2019Delirium\u2019<\/i>, a track far more in step with the quality displayed in the album\u2019s initial stages.<\/p>\n

Overall, it\u2019s difficult to ignore the enormous debt that Beware Of Darkness<\/b> owe many of rock\u2019s most revered artists on this release, with nary a minute going by without a riff or vocal cadence recalling the likes of Zeppelin, Sabbath or the White Stripes. Despite this lack of innovation, \u2018Are You Real?\u2019<\/b> does enough in terms of musical proficiency and hooks to make this a solid blues record in its own right. It may be miles away from rock music\u2019s cutting edge, but for those who looking for a well executed throwback, you could do far worse than this.<\/p>\n
