From the outset, \u2018The Depression Sessions\u2019<\/i> EP is a celebration. Three of the finest names in contemporary extreme metal, Thy Art is Murder<\/b>, The Acacia Strain<\/b> and Fit For an Autopsy<\/b> releasing a split EP is a healthy sign of community in the genre. However, it also doesn\u2019t feel very celebratory because\u2026 listen to it!<\/p>\n

Recorded in December 2015, following relentless months of touring by each band, the EP contains the sounds of groups of young men at their wits\u2019 end, venting out built-up frustrations into a compendium of misery. \u201cOld world, don\u2019t look away, I want you to watch your children die\u201d<\/i> CJ McMahon bellows on Thy Art is Murder\u2019s<\/b> \u2018They Will Know Another,\u2019<\/i> highlighting a key theme in all these songs \u2013 humanity causing its own destruction.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As Thy Art<\/b> take on the wider world armed with blast beat led death metal, The Acacia Strain<\/b> bring their trademark sludgy grooves to \u2018Sensory Deprivation\u2019<\/i> which laments the self-destruction brought on by depression, as Vincent Bennet<\/b> churns out \u201cWalking a fine line, continue on or put a bullet through my mind,\u201d<\/i>\u201c which screams classic TAS<\/b>, but also lacks the ambition that has made their recent output so exciting.<\/p>\n

Compartively, Fit For an Autopsy<\/b>\u2019s contribution, \u2018Flatlining\u2019<\/i>, brings more inventive lead guitar work into the fold, with traces of Gojira floating through its verses before the final beatdowns bring us home with an earth-shattering impact.<\/p>\n

Concluding with a series of covers, each band shows how established their sounds are, by taking classics by Rammstein<\/b>, Soundgarden<\/b> and Nine Inch Nails<\/b> and giving them a sound that could belong only to each band.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Depression Sessions\u2019<\/i> is an encouraging collaboration in the deathcore scene, and though Thy Art is Murder<\/b> have the real standout moments here, The Acacia Strain<\/b> and Fit For an Autopsy<\/b> are uncompromising as ever. However, it\u2019s six songs of all-out brutality, and that\u2019s worth celebrating.<\/p>\n
