{"id":4913,"date":"2016-08-16T12:30:11","date_gmt":"2016-08-16T12:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/already-heard-recommends-puppy\/"},"modified":"2018-06-07T19:15:05","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T18:15:05","slug":"already-heard-recommends-puppy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/already-heard-recommends-puppy\/","title":{"rendered":"Already Heard Recommends: Puppy"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/19b507ec785e90f72d777e63ea8573bf\/tumblr_obx1sk8h7F1r8no6so1_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<h2 align=\"center\">In an age where every band is for some reason or another boxed in a genre, London-based trio <b>Puppy<\/b> are a slice of fresh air.<\/h2>\n<p>Formed in late 2014 by vocalist\/guitarist Jock Norton and drummer Billy Howard, later joined by bassist Will Michael, <b>Puppy<\/b> has been gathering momentum for the best part of the year with their mix of harmonious melodies and crushing riffs. <i>\u201cI like weird indie rock music, I like really heavy stuff; a broad cross-section of different stuff and I think that comes out in our music\u201d<\/i> states Norton as we meet to discuss their second release, the ideally titled <i>\u2018Vol II\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>It picks up where last October\u2019s self-titled EP left off, yet benefits from the bands time together with songs such as <i>&#8216;Entombed\u2019<\/i> and <i>&#8216;Arabella\u2019<\/i> showing a refined approach. <i>\u201cWe tried to explore new territory\u201d<\/i> states Jock, <i>\u201cI think listening to the whole thing, it\u2019s a bit more cohesive. The last one was more song, song, song. This one has more of an arc, a narrative curve. I\u2019m very happy with that EP, but there\u2019s certain things we wanted to explore more on this new one. In general, it\u2019s a bit darker. It\u2019s quite melancholy.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>It is no doubt that the three-piece has achieved their aim in producing a consistent and concise snapshot of <b>Puppy<\/b> in their current state. The aforementioned <i>&#8216;Entombed\u2019<\/i> is dominated by razor sharp riffs, whilst <i>&#8216;Warm\u2019<\/i> wallows in its comforting indie rock skin before <i>&#8216;Here at Home\u2019<\/i> offers a brooding Iron Maiden-esque tone with Norton\u2019s complimentary sombre vocals. When asked to sum up the EP, Billy states <i>\u201cit\u2019s a synced cross-section of Puppy. I think we\u2019ve managed to distill a lot of our influences, there is a lot of stuff we\u2019re into. It\u2019s a true version of the band (so far).\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The mish-mash of stellar riffery and Weezer-like melodies with a hint of grunge has been impressing critics and fans throughout the summer. Most notably an early afternoon slot at Download later followed by an impressive outing at 2000 Trees.
