Call me a miserable old git, but I\u2019m unremittingly cynical about positive, feel-good music. Far too often, such work descends into empty sloganeering and false platitudes. Sure, when you\u2019re 20 and feel like you can change the world, it has its place \u2013 but at 35 and somewhat jaded, you\u2019re well placed to see through the bullshit. <\/p>\n

And it\u2019s difficult music to get right too; Iron Chic succeed thanks to their seemingly perpetual existential crises, grounding their positivity in relation to Big Questions, while Red City Radio, The Smith Street Band and The Hold Steady have the power to shake you to your core with freewheeling positive jams. It\u2019s a short list, but London\u2019s Rob Lynch<\/b> belongs on there too, and \u2018Baby, I\u2019m a Runaway\u2019<\/i> has the sort of positive, outward-looking and life-affirming album that never feels cloying or sentimental. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

That he never really comes close to getting it wrong is testament to how good a songwriter Lynch is. \u2018Runaway\u2019<\/i>, from which the album takes its name, could have been an awkward, sickly sweet car-crash but instead it drips with sincerity, Lynch<\/b> wide-eyed with optimism. If he believes every word he\u2019s singing, then it\u2019s far easier to buy into his rhetoric. By the second listen you\u2019ll be singing along too, a convert to his personality-driven indie-pop. <\/p>\n

Elsewhere, the grunge-lite, Weezer-style geek rock of \u2018Salt Spring\u2019<\/i> comes armed with a monstrous chorus that will surely make it a fan favourite in 6 months\u2019 time, even if it feels like an abrupt change of sound, while the jaunty \u2018Sure Thing\u2019<\/i> possesses such broad appeal it would dominate the airwaves if The Man wasn\u2019t so risk averse. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s not all throng-pleasing numbers \u2013 although this is where much of \u2018Baby, I\u2019m a Runaway\u2019<\/i> is at its most comfortable \u2013 but quieter moments such as \u2018Tectonic Plates\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Youth\u2019<\/i> showcase Lynch<\/b>\u2019s flair for conjuring up nostalgic pictures through some low-key stories and kitchen-sink dramas. Like much of \u2018Baby I\u2019m a Runaway\u2019<\/i> it\u2019s proof that Lynch<\/b> is a wonderful storyteller with an ability to make your heart swell. <\/p>\n
