Ashestoangels<\/b> are riding the crest of a wave \u2013 hitting festival line-ups and support slots left, right and centre, there\u2019s no putting down these new horror punk heroes. Bursting onto the Download Festival<\/b> Dogtooth stage is one of their many commitments and a clear indicator of a band that\u2019s about to shatter the glass ceiling any moment now.<\/p>\n

Frontman Adam Crilly tells Already Heard<\/b> how he feels about Download Festival<\/b>, fronting the \u201cnew grave\u201d<\/i> movement and what My Chemical Romance means to him.<\/p>\n

AH: First time at Download, how\u2019s it feeling? <\/b>
Adam: Scary! I don\u2019t really get nervous but there are so many things that are out of my control at Download, I think that might be it. I\u2019m used to being in charge! Camden Rocks the other week was the first time I played with no sound check and I wasn\u2019t relaxed from the get-go, normally the worry eats into the first five minutes but I had such a great time because it was such a great day! <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: You\u2019ve been camping here since Thursday, how\u2019s the weather treated you? <\/b>
Crilly: Thursday was glorious and Friday morning was glorious and then I don\u2019t know what the fuck happened, did we anger the sky gods?!<\/i><\/p>\n

AH: Going out to brave the weather for Maiden later? <\/b>
Crilly: Of course! I\u2019ve seen NOFX so that was my favourite must-see this year. There\u2019s a ten-minute window where we\u2019re the only band playing at the entire festival.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

AH: You said on social media earlier you\u2019d have to cancel your set because you broke your nail\u2026 have you recovered from that trauma yet? <\/b>
Crilly: It was purple a minute ago, but we\u2019re gonna be alright\u2026 I think.<\/i><\/p>\n

AH: You\u2019re based in Bristol these days, great for venues \u2013 favourite Bristol venue? <\/b>
Crilly: It used to be The Croft but now it\u2019s gone so I do love the Fleece especially when it\u2019s full.<\/i><\/p>\n

AH: So how have you guys been since we last saw you with Aiden? <\/b>
Crilly: Things are fine now! Our boy Chris Kiddier has joined us again, he used to play with us and we\u2019ve known him forever so it\u2019s a pleasure to have him back. Everyone\u2019s just been keeping it warm for him. <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: You\u2019ve got such a dedicated fanbase out there, you could easily crowdfund the next album and you\u2019d be well in! <\/b>
Crilly: We tried that on the album before the last one and it made us feel like the creative process was more of a commodity. I really like the idea of getting everyone involved but it got to the point where it felt like we were running a music store and it wasn\u2019t our band so I\u2019d rather people being able to be as involved or as uninvolved as they like. Sometimes it can feel like you\u2019re giving it away while people contribute with their pocket. We write these songs so that people can sing along, not to give us \u00a327 off Spotify!<\/i><\/p>\n

AH: You\u2019re becoming frontrunners for this \u201cnew grave\u201d movement these days. <\/b>
Crilly: Yeah we were given that ball and we just started running with it! It\u2019s quite fun, I like how ambiguous it is, it\u2019s just been a really cool but crazy couple of months where we\u2019re just everywhere doing that thing. You always want to be at the end of a movement like that and be just like My Chemical Romance\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

AH: Speaking of which, favourite MCR era? <\/b>
Crilly: Well \u2018Three Cheers\u2019 was the first record I got, then \u2018Black Parade\u2019 is the last album I got excited about when it came out. It was just as good as I was hoping \u2013 maybe I\u2019ve grown a lot older and more cynical since then but everything since \u2018Black Parade\u2019 by any band hasn\u2019t lived up to it! That\u2019s a really sweeping statement that\u2019s probably not true. It\u2019s so good but I went back to \u2018Danger Days\u2019 and I like it more now than I did at first, but the bar was set so high. Being the goth kid with the makeup, \u2018Black Parade\u2019 and \u2018Three Cheers\u2019 really spoke to me, but now we\u2019re moving onto a post-apocalyptic wasteland\u2026 like what? I don\u2019t feel like I\u2019m wearing a costume I can put on and off to fit concepts, this is just me. <\/i><\/p>\n
