\nWhen bands return to similar themes throughout an album, or recycle the same riffs, or make reference to previous songs, they\u2019re usually lauded for their creativity and vision.<\/p>\n

Step forward Canada\u2019s Pkew Pkew Pkew<\/b>, who do all of these things yet still sound like a lobotomised frat party. And it\u2019s the sort of party where you spend your life waiting for an invite.<\/p>\n

Silly, irreverent and genuinely very funny, \u2018Pkew Pkew Pkew\u2019<\/i> features 12 boozy anthems that will make you smile like a maniac and get you singing-along instantly. It\u2019s undemanding stuff; there\u2019s no grand plan or big message, just a dozen super-short rough gems \u2013 mostly about drinking or skateboarding \u2013 that demand to be sung loudly, arm-in-arm, with strangers in the pit. <\/p>\n

Yet while the self-titled is superficially unchallenging, Pkew Pkew Pkew<\/b> possess some sharp minds \u2013 proving it takes some clever guys to make music this dumb. The one-two of \u2018Asshole Pandemic\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Prequal to Asshole Pandemic\u2019<\/i> (tracks 2 and 3 respectively), details the trials and tribulations of living with a dreadful neighbour. They payoff? That Pkew Pkew Pkew<\/b> were even worse in the first place. Coupled with some razor sharp songwriting, it makes for a winning combination. They\u2019re a talented bunch too; just take the outrageous guitar solos on the likes of \u2018Blood Clot\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Glory Days\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s even time for flashes of insight and pathos; albeit twisted and fleeting. \u201cWe don\u2019t make much money; that should come as no surprise\u201d <\/i> they sing on the excellent \u2018Before We Go Out Drinking\u2019<\/i>, while on \u2018Kathie Lee and Hoda\u2019<\/i> they conclude \u201c\u2026What\u2019s wrong with my life? It\u2019s the debt and depression, decisions I\u2019ve made\u201d <\/i> (again, offset by the desire to live 100% in the here and now with the reasoning \u201cFuck it, I\u2019ll worry about that shit some other day\u201d <\/i>).<\/p>\n

The best thing of all though; this year I\u2019m going to FEST and Pkew Pkew Pkew<\/b> are on the bill. Goes without saying, but you\u2019ll find me down the front, beer(s) in hand, having the time of my life.<\/p>\n
