Fun, fast, riff-packed tracks, the occasional sadder, slower number and heartfelt metaphorical lyricism revolving around loss, heartbreak and isolation: the themes we all know and love from established pop punk favourites Real Friends<\/b>. Now they\u2019re back with long-awaited sophomore album \u2018The Home Inside My Head,\u2019<\/i> a collection of great jams that feature the latter with an evolved, maturing sound.<\/p>\n

‘Mokena’<\/i> fills the role of the aforementioned trademark slower song – the \u2018I\u2019ve Given Up On You\u2019<\/i> or \u2018Sixteen\u2019<\/i> if you will. It is atmospherically melancholy as expected, but has a more progressive edge to the chorus that demonstrates advancement; it is reflective, featuring the discovery of a new-found ability to accept messing up, and move on: \u201cI\u2019m f*cking up and getting over it, I\u2019m over it.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2019Empty Picture Frames\u2019<\/i> is an album highlight with an effectively fluctuating tempo and solitary, sorrowful lyrics that allude to the album title: \u201cThe home inside my head has a bed for me that no-one will ever get the chance to see.\u201d<\/i> Frontman Dan Lambton\u2019s humble vocals make the track stand out, proving a step up from the angst-fuelled shouting to which we are accustomed.<\/p>\n

\u2018Mess\u2019<\/i> mirrors \u2018Mokena\u2019<\/i> thematically (\u201cLast year I was a train wreck, now I\u2019m just a mess \/ I\u2019m letting go so I don\u2019t lose myself\u201d<\/i>) and as Real Friends<\/b> love to do, references another band. It\u2019s awesome \u2013 and it\u2019s Death Cab For Cutie, if you wondered. A neat track that bleeds contemporary pop punk in all its glory. <\/p>\n

\u2018Colder Quicker\u2019<\/i> is the most catchy with its fun riffs and noteworthy lyrics (\u201cI feel it in my insides \/ I\u2019m paralysed with guilt\u201d<\/i>) closing the album perfectly, whilst \u2018Eastwick\u2019<\/i> preens its twinkly intro and delightful simplicity. The lyrics are both highly metaphorical and rhetorical (\u201cWhich branch fell and left me here to crawl through this sinkhole?\u201d<\/i>) throughout, as is the soft, easy tone emphasising Lambton\u2019s habitually praiseworthy vocals.<\/p>\n

Real Friends<\/b> have been previously slated for their regurgitated style, but we can\u2019t help but love their music. Either way, \u2018The Home Inside My Head\u2019<\/i> does prove an evolution of sound, most notably in \u2018Scared to Be Alone\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Door Without A Key\u2019<\/i>, and an advancement thematically as mentioned, but nonetheless allows the Illinois four-piece to shine as they always have, and as they merit to. <\/p>\n
