{"id":5557,"date":"2016-04-28T13:00:26","date_gmt":"2016-04-28T13:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-bad-ideas-bad-ideas\/"},"modified":"2018-03-21T22:16:05","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:16:05","slug":"album-review-bad-ideas-bad-ideas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-bad-ideas-bad-ideas\/","title":{"rendered":"Album Review:\u00a0Bad Ideas &#8211;\u00a0Bad Ideas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/c97c5f3458a3c9cf545a80f6311da403\/tumblr_o65j2ckcfO1r8no6so3_r2_1280.jpg\" width=\"250em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p>In an alternate universe there\u2019s been an announcement that <b>Bad Ideas<\/b> are headlining the second stage at this year\u2019s Reading Festival; their muscular yet bouncy, melody-drenched indie-rock a perfect fit for late evening sing-alongs with friends and strangers alike. <\/p>\n<p>Sadly, our universe has once again proved to be an insufferable shit. \u2018Our\u2019 <b>Bad Ideas<\/b> have called it a day after failing to find a record label to distribute their now self-titled swansong. And, in what can only be peak irony, it\u2019s a fine effort and a fitting testament to one of the hardest working acts out there. Proof positive indeed that our universe is the master of shithousery\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Not that <b>Bad Ideas<\/b> need, or want, your pity; <i>\u2018Bad Ideas\u2019<\/i> is the sound of a band coming out windmilling, arms flailing purposefully and head down to avoid any blowbacks \u2013 and it sounds lovely. <\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/badideas.bandcamp.com\/album\/bad-ideas-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bad Ideas (2016) by Bad Ideas<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The punchy rock sound remains, but if anything, the melody has been ratcheted up several notches. <i>\u2018Castles\u2019<\/i>, for example, has some serious indie-pop swagger \u2013 like if Supergrass hit the JD and Cokes and Jagermeisters a little too heavily before woozily staggering into the night. It\u2019s fun and infectious stuff played with little pretention but plenty of passion. <\/p>\n<p>Better still are the bruised <i>\u2018Give Up\u2019<\/i> and live favourite <i>\u2018Brian\u2019s Boat\u2019<\/i>. Both are frenetically urgent, pleading and pulsating, but blessed with some razor sharp hooks. It\u2019s what <b>Bad Ideas<\/b> do best and these two tracks in particular are straight from the top drawer. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere <i>\u2018Lighting Fires &amp; Making Mess\u2019<\/i> is a thrashy rock anthem with a monstrous riff, proving the Lincoln mob can still rage with the best of them, while <i>\u2018Oh My Trouble with Sin\u2019<\/i> is a breezy slice of alt-rock that adds poignancy to the group\u2019s decision to call it a day.<\/p>\n<p>Yet ultimately, it\u2019s this very decision that colours every aspect of <i>\u2018Bad Ideas\u2019<\/i>. It\u2019s an enjoyable epitaph for a band that did it for the right reasons. Like their Tellison brethren, <b>Bad Ideas<\/b> are the type of band who write some stellar indie-rock songs and knock it out of the park every time they hit the stage. No frills, no drama, just bloody good music.
