It can be easy to get snooty about an unpretentious pop song; something with a gentle melody, an easy hook and a traditional song structure.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia\u2019s Hurry<\/b> are absolute masters of the classic indie-pop sound and \u2018Guided Meditation\u2019<\/i> a glorious example of doing all the simple things exceptionally well. Of course, that\u2019s not to denigrate the craft that goes into making art \u2013 it\u2019s just that songs like \u2018When I\u2019m With You\u2019<\/i> are so immediate and contagious, they\u2019ll be stuck in your head almost instantly \u2013 and it feels effortless.<\/p>\n

Recalling the likes of Teenage Fanclub, The Shins, Dillon Fence and later-career power-pop Gin Blossoms, \u2018Guided Meditation\u2019<\/i> pretty much touches base with every alternative pop movement of the last 30 years; a bit of jangle pop here, a splash of dream pop there, a hint of college rock \u2013 there\u2019s even nods to Britpop, with the introduction to \u2018Nothing to Stay\u2019<\/i> or the sombre \u2018Love is Elusive\u2019<\/i> not too far removed from Oasis or The Verve.<\/p>\n

Guided Meditation by Hurry<\/a><\/p>\n

Lyrically, \u2018Guided Meditation\u2019<\/i> is just as interesting; songs like \u2018Under Her Thumb\u2019<\/i> display anxiety about growing older, while the group (led by Everyone Everywere\u2019s Matthew Scottoline) hit on issues of mental health and relationship breakdown. On the surface \u2018Guided Meditation\u2019<\/i> may sound happy and carefree, but there\u2019s hidden depths throughout.<\/p>\n

It means Hurry<\/b> have delivered the perfect pop album for people who like a variety of different genres, distilled and decanted into 9 of the most wonderful songs you could hear. There\u2019s a familiarity about songs like \u2018Shake It Off\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Fascination\u2019<\/i>, and when played a summer party they\u2019re sure to elicit questions of “Who is this?”<\/i> and “Haven\u2019t I heard it before?”<\/i> Unless you have very cool friends, you can be sure they haven\u2019t \u2013 but they\u2019ll wish they had. <\/p>\n
