As someone who can\u2019t dance for shit, I was dreading dipping my foot into the world of alternative electronic music. But duo Blaqk Audio<\/b> – a side-project of AFI\u2019s Davey Havok and Jade Puget \u2013 have created a uniquely captivating soundscape with their third record, \u2018Material\u2019<\/i> reminiscent of their goth punk allies in William Control.<\/p>\n

Opener \u2018Waiting To Be Told\u2019<\/i> launches you into the disorientated and dark land of Blaqk Audio<\/b> with heavily reverberated synths while the next track \u2018First To Love\u2019<\/i> stands out with repetitious but poignant lyricism reflecting the typical unrequited love theme. \u2018Ceremonial (Burst Into Stars)\u2019<\/i> holds little of the underlying darkness of the previous songs but instead sounds like something you\u2019d expect to hear on a night out in Ibiza \u2013 make of that what you will. Abruptly and seemingly misplaced, \u2018Anointed\u2019<\/i> interrupts with a slow and prominent bassline which continues through the sombre vocal progressions of the song.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Another strange turn in the album, the very 90s dance pop \u2018Graphic Violence\u2019<\/i> is another odd standout with a catchy arcade-esque melody which niggles away in your head. Title track \u2018Material\u2019<\/i> revisits the reverberating introduction and features a heavy background beat which carries the song to the end. Lastly, the bouncy \u2018You Will Hate Me\u2019<\/i> finishes the album off on a high note by combining the experimented elements of this record together, showing us what Blaqk Audio<\/b> are all about.<\/p>\n

As someone who hadn\u2019t listened to Blaqk Audio<\/b> before, for me, \u2018Material\u2019<\/i> is a strange mish-mash of dark undertones and popular dance music. An acquired taste, but one to be tested if you\u2019re in the mood to challenge your usual go-to music tastes. A little bit like AFI themselves, it\u2019s a love or hate thing. <\/p>\n
