Dowsing<\/b> are angry; not a \u201cyou stole my socks and you didn\u2019t share that packet of Skittles\u201d angry, but a \u201cyou rinsed the flat while I was out at work and now you\u2019re talking shit about me on the Internet \u2013 and where\u2019s my dog?\u201d angry. And, for a band that\u2019s written optimistic songs about going to Winnipeg and meeting The Weakerthans\u2019 John K Samson, it\u2019s a shock. <\/p>\n

\u201cPunk is dead, and all your friends will be soon,\u201d<\/i> the Chicagoan heroes bark on opener \u2018Wasted On Hate\u2019<\/i> \u2013 the irony being it\u2019s the most punk Dowsing<\/b> have ever sounded. It\u2019s a strong opening, but it\u2019s the vitriol with which the line is delivered that really grabs the attention. And it\u2019s a similar story throughout \u2018Okay\u2019<\/i> (or \u2018Untitled\u2019<\/i> \u2013 Dowsing<\/b>\u2019s third full-length doesn\u2019t really have a “proper” title). <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

With that in mind, you might think \u2018Okay\u2019<\/i> was some lamentable mope-fest, with Dowsing<\/b> bemoaning the scene, Chicago, critics and the list is endless. They even have the temerity to say \u201cNo-one likes us anymore\u201d<\/i> on \u2018Finally Ghost\u2019<\/i>. It\u2019s a lyric dripping with irony, characterised by chants of \u201calmost good\u201d<\/i> made through stifled laughs at the end of the song. Dowsing<\/b> may be angry, but they still possess that engaging, knock-about charm that makes them both likeable (despite their protestations) and far better than just \u2018good\u2019. <\/p>\n

Dowsing<\/b> were one of the bands that pulled me back into the emo scene (did someone say \u2018revival\u2019\u2026) and 2013\u2019s \u2018I Don\u2019t Even Care Anymore\u2019<\/i> in particular is a hugely enjoyable record, filled with wry, self-effacing humour and moments of heartfelt insight. \u2018Okay\u2019<\/i> builds on this in just about every way. It\u2019s way more accessible, it\u2019s certainly more cynical, yet it\u2019s also unbelievably honest. And the hooks; \u2018Okay\u2019<\/i> has more hooks than a fancy dress shop in the run-up to National Speak Like A Pirate Day. Indeed, cuts like \u2018Dissolve\u2019<\/i>, \u2018Born to Soar\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Kept Me Around\u2019<\/i> are so immediate and rewarding, the progression displayed by Dowsing<\/b> is dizzying and dazzling. <\/p>\n

With new records from Into It Over It and The Hotelier, combined with the critical success of recent efforts by Foxing and The World Is A Beautiful Place, it feels like the emo revival has come of age. Dowsing<\/b> are another to deliver a career defining moment with \u2018Okay\u2019<\/i>, and while it may lack the expansive progression of their peers, it\u2019s the best the group has ever sounded. So yeah, I\u2019m not sorry, Dowsing<\/b> \u2013 you\u2019re still great. <\/p>\n
