The creative tussle of frontman Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Carpenter serves as <i>\u2018Gore\u2019<\/i>s centrepiece; partly intense and partly harmonious. However this does not deter from <i>\u2018Gore\u2019<\/i>s impact.<\/p>\n<p>Early cuts <i>&lsquo;Acid Hologram\u2019<\/i> and <i>&#8216;Doomed User\u2019<\/i> are menacing with sharp, thrash-esque guitars combining with Moreno\u2019s scathing voice creating a subsonic growl which overwhelms. It brings a heavy foundation that is soon countered as <i>&#8216;Hearts\/Wireless\u2019<\/i> offers one of the album&rsquo;s most intimate moments with its potent tone. Moreno\u2019s drawn out vocals prove to be effortless and, for the most part, take centre stage whilst rippling guitars weave in and out making the whole song feel spacious.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>Lyrically Moreno takes a self-exploration route with <i>\u2018Pittura Infamante\u2019<\/i> showing his relief as he states <i>\u201cI will sing your praises,\u201d<\/i> whilst <i>\u2018Xenon\u2019<\/i> displays a familiar heightened approach; <i>&ldquo;We\u2019re the lions at the gates \/ We\u2019re the diamond in your brain.\u201d<\/i> The dream-like imagery counters Carpenter\u2019s thunderous guitars throughout. However on <i>\u2019(L)MIRL\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2018Gore\u2019<\/i>, there seems to be some form of unity between Moreno and Carpenter as thick, stabbing guitars drop in and out with Abe Cunningham\u2019s dependable drum work proving to be the band&rsquo;s backbone with Serigo Vega\u2019s six-string bass bringing a broad texture. <\/p>\n<p>Penultimate track <i>\u2018Phantom Bride\u2019<\/i> drifts with subtle beauty as Jerry Cantrell supplies a stirring solo, before being rounded off with a huge, drawn-out chorus. <i>\u2018Rubicon\u2019<\/i> ties up the loose ends of the album as it blends the musical intensity with the cathartic lyricism of Moreno. It\u2019s a fitting conclusion to a record that is imposing yet satisfying.<\/p>\n<p>At times, <i>\u2018Gore\u2019<\/i> is jarring and thrives off an unrelenting need to be heavy yet doesn\u2019t deter itself from being diverse. The balance of being cordial and ferocious is delivered precisely &#8211; it\u2019s <b>Deftones<\/b> being adventurous but sticking to their roots. The evolution of <b>Deftones<\/b> continues and is intriguing as ever. <\/p>\n<p>4\/5<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8216;Gore\u2019<\/i> by <b>Deftones<\/b> is out now on <b>Warner Bros.
