Churning out a handful of \u2018Stories For Monday\u2019<\/i>, The Summer Set<\/b> remain true to their name \u2013 purveyors of sun-soaked anthems.<\/p>\n

The Summer Set<\/b>\u2019s style changes with the wind. Moving on from the cluttered \u2018Legendary\u2019<\/i>, their fourth full-length string to their bow \u2018Stories for Monday\u2019<\/i> may drop names and appear somewhat half-hearted but it\u2019s still a keen reminder that there\u2019s talent in this paddling pool.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the flagrant sampling of The Who\u2019s \u2018Baba \u2018O\u2019Riley\u2019<\/i> in \u2018Figure Me Out\u2019<\/i> sets things off to a confusing start. With Brian Dales\u2019 modestly versatile vocals, their message is loud and clear \u2013 \u201cI just wanna fall in love before I\u2019m dead.\u201d<\/i> On the other hand, there\u2019s the quirky \u2018Missin\u2019 You\u2019<\/i> that states there\u2019s no love lost and that moving on is perfectly possible, even in the unforgiving realms of pop punk that produced the disgruntled swagger of \u2018All My Friends\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a clear maturity to the youthful compositions of \u2018The Night Is Young\u2019<\/i> and \u2018When The Party Ends,\u2019<\/i> with tinges of the rock-infused intensity formed over their near decade together. With the contagious repetition of \u2018Change Your Mind\u2019<\/i>, however, Brian\u2019s vocals feel weary as if the sparkle\u2019s departed the microphone, true also of the ironically cheery yet tired top notes of \u2018All Downhill From Here\u2019<\/i>. Even so, the free spirit and halcyon sentiment are set aside just in time for punchy closer \u2018Wasted\u2019<\/i>. It\u2019s true, \u201cyouth wasn\u2019t wasted on us,\u201d<\/i> and as the crowd chants make the album\u2019s swansong, the \u2018Stories For Monday\u2019<\/i> draw to a close not a moment too soon.<\/p>\n

It seems The Summer Set<\/b> will always hold a certain \u201cmeh\u201d factor \u2013 you can hear it in the exhausted \u2018Change Your Mind\u2019<\/i> – but this remains a cute compilation of summer-ready tunes for those so inclined to drink in the rays this year.<\/p>\n
