You can always rely on Europe to bring it with the loud\/quiet post-hardcore \u2013 but it’s always exciting when a band manages to put a unique spin on things. <\/p>\n

Milan’s sittingthesummerout<\/b> have done just that on the moody and atmospheric \u2018Brick and Mortar’<\/i>, which owes as much to the likes of La Dispute or Old Gray or Southtowne as it does Waterdown. As a result, it’s a wonderfully dynamic take on the tried and trusted. Indeed, from the gorgeously textured \u2018Dry, Dry June’<\/i> to the cataclysmic conclusion of \u2018Permanence’<\/i>, this dynamism excites most and it truly marks sittingthesummerout<\/b> as ones to watch. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Brick and Mortar by sittingthesummerout<\/a><\/p>\n

Musically and stylistically, it’s great to see a band take so many risks \u2013 and succeed so often \u2013 but it’s also heartening to see a band invest just as much in the lyrics and concept as they do in a sound that wants to crush your skull. When they pull all of the threads together \u2013 like on the exceptional \u2018To Those Concerned’<\/i> or \u2018Nothing Changes in Baltimore’<\/i> \u2013 you’re left in no doubt about sittingthesummerout<\/b>’s endless potential. <\/p>\n

At times introspective and \u2018talky’ \u2013 there’s a really interesting speak\/sing approach that is utilised well throughout by vocalist Samir Batista \u2013 at others riff-heavy and supercharged, \u2018Brick and Mortar’<\/i> hangs together wonderfully, ebbing and flowing as it thrashes around.<\/p>\n

Throughout, Batista feels like he’s on the precipice \u2013 emphasised by moments of musical disquiet, such as that in \u2018It Won’t Rain Forever’<\/i> \u2013 yet \u2018Brick and Mortar’<\/i> never feels like a pantomime melodrama. Instead, it’s a thrilling and progressive take on a familiar sound \u2013 and it’s a winner from start to finish.<\/p>\n
