\"\"Ah, Weezer<\/b>. They\u2019re a band whose output in recent years have split opinions. With a tendency to churn out a hit single or two amongst a barrage of ineffective material has left some questioning Weezer<\/b>\u2019s legacy, whilst others are left consistently yearning for a return to their \u201890s peak.<\/p>\n

Album number ten (and their fourth eponymous) ‘The White Album\u2019<\/i> sees a band with a purpose, with a unified set of songs that sound at home amongst the sun-drenched West Coast setting they call home. Early cuts ‘California Kids\u2019<\/i> and ‘Wind In Our Sail\u2019<\/i> quickly remind you of Rivers Cuomo and company\u2019s power-pop prowess; upbeat, hook-y and careless. There\u2019s a blissful and playful quality to what\u2019s on offer. Likewise, recent single ‘King of the World\u2019<\/i> sounds like your favourable Weezer<\/b> single. ‘Thank God for Girls\u2019<\/i> carries itself with a blatant pop pride albeit Cuomo\u2019s \u201crapping\u201d stream-of-consciousness.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, \u2019(Girl We Got a) Good Thing\u2019<\/i> channels the bouncy spirit of The Beach Boys\u2019 Brian Wilson with its jaunty piano. ‘Do You Wanna Go High?\u2019<\/i> serves as a highlight for its ‘Pinkerton\u2019<\/i>-esque delivery; screeching, feedback guitars and slacker lifestyle lyricism. Similarly ‘L.A. Girlz\u2019<\/i> wouldn\u2019t be out of place on ‘The Blue Album\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n

So does ‘The White Album\u2019<\/i> see Weezer<\/b> back at their best? I\u2019d say yes, it\u2019s certainly their most consistent effort in years. It sees a band knowing what longtime fans want. There is a sense of familiarity at its core; upbeat, somewhat unorthodox and infectious.<\/p>\n

Admittedly it doesn\u2019t hit the significant standards of ‘Blue\u2019<\/i> and ‘Pinkerton\u2019<\/i>, but in an ever-growing catalogue ‘White\u2019<\/i> deserves to be held in high regard. For all their past misgivings, ‘White\u2019<\/i> highlights Weezer\u2019s strengths from start to finish. If \u2018Everything Will Be Alright in the End\u2019<\/i> saw Weezer<\/b> back on the right track, \u2018The White Album\u2019<\/i> finds them with renewed confidence that flourishes.<\/p>\n
