Three years to be exact. While we were given a run of Bat Sabbath shows last summer and with plans to celebrate 10 years <em>\u2018Hail Destroyer\u2019<\/em> very soon, you\u2019d think the Canadian hardcore punks were taking it easy and celebrating their past. Oh, how so wrong we were!<\/p>\n<p>Recorded during the cold Canadian winter, <strong>Cancer Bats<\/strong> are back with full of intent. Album #6 comes in the form of <em>\u2018The Spark That Moves\u2019<\/em> and sees the quartet skipping the usual industry formalities and putting it out in the open.<\/p>\n<p>As always, there is an relentless energy to <strong>Cancer Bats<\/strong>\u2019 sound as they supply sludge-drenched riffs with Liam Cormier\u2019s familiar growl. <em>\u2018Brightest Day\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018We Run Free\u2019<\/em> are early blasts of adrenaline with guitarist Scott Middleton\u2019s signature squeals and bassist Jaye Schwarzer supplying a thick bounce. Throughout both Schwarzer and drummer Mike Peters keep the momentum going at breakneck speed with Cormier\u2019s vocals and Middleton\u2019s riffs simply adding to the raw, frantic tone.<\/p>\n<p>On the surface,<em> \u2018The Spark That Moves\u2019<\/em> is a melting pot of everything <strong>Cancer Bats<\/strong> do well. <em>\u2018Space and Time\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018Headwound\u2019<\/em> are equally chaotic. <em>\u2018Bed of Nails\u2019<\/em> highlights <strong>Cancer Bats<\/strong>\u2019 anthemic quality, as Cormier\u2019s defiantly states<em> \u201cNever going to quit\u201d<\/em> against a backdrop of chugging guitars. While <em>\u2018Fear Will Kill Us All\u2019<\/em> is a thrash onslaught before <em>\u2018Can\u2019t Sleep\u2019<\/em> brings a rigid slice of hardcore punk to proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>It all comes to ahead with <em>\u2018Winterpeg\u2019,<\/em> an ode to the city of Winnipeg, their adopted home as they recorded <em>\u2018The Spark That Moves\u2019.<\/em> It\u2019s a three-minute stomp with Chris Hannah of local punk heroes Propagandhi adding to the defiant cry of <em>\u201cno surrender!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While <strong>Cancer Bats<\/strong> may have caught everyone off guard with this surprise release, they\u2019ve stylistically stuck to the ferocious, riff-filled crunch that they\u2019re known for.
