The double album \u2013 a creative peak or a self-indulgent transgression? They\u2019re a trial of intensity and concentration, demanding of the artist and the listener. And they\u2019re mostly hit and miss. In fact, you could list the essential double albums on two hands and still have digits spare. <\/p>\n

Now, the thought of a sixteen-song-long, near 75-minute double album does not make me want to bounce around the living room. It\u2019s a big investment of time, and you can\u2019t just dip in and out. Nor can you realistically listen to it on your commute (unless your commute is unusually long, or the double album is by The Locust). So imagine my surprise at Sioux Falls<\/b>\u2019 rather excellent \u2018Rot Forever\u2019<\/i> which has just found itself a vacant finger on my double album list. <\/p>\n

You see, for its entire meandering run-time, not only does \u2018Rot Forever\u2019<\/i> keep your attention \u2013 and mesmerizingly so \u2013 but once it\u2019s finished it wants you to repeat the experience, teasing you with the promise of more spectacular moments to make your head spin or your spirit swoon.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Rot Forever by Sioux Falls<\/a><\/p>\n

There\u2019s two very distinct styles to \u2018Rot Forever\u2019<\/i>, and they marry beautifully throughout. There\u2019s the raw, frustrated, pent-up aggression displayed on cuts such as opener \u20183 Fast\u2019<\/i>, which includes the suckerpunch payoff: \u201cMan, I know you\u2019ve got some fucked up thoughts, but you broke her jaw when she broke your heart.\u201d<\/i> In all seriousness, if you\u2019re writing lyrics as powerful as that \u2013 lyrics that make you want to set the world to rights \u2013 you\u2019re doing something right. <\/p>\n

But then there\u2019s this grungy, alt-rock slacker spirit that\u2019s conversational in tone and unfocused in nature, taking in everything from popular culture (references abound, including \u2018True Detective\u2019, \u2018South Park\u2019 and \u2018Halo 2\u2019) to the idea of just lying around in your boxers all day ( \u2018The Winner\u2019<\/i>).<\/p>\n

Combined, it means there\u2019s this undercurrent of anxiety and anger to the superficial fluff; a gallows humour to finding yourself in some pretty shitty situations or facing the reality that life as a grown-up isn\u2019t all fun and games. The benefit of such an approach is that for near-on 75 minutes Sioux Falls<\/b> have delivered a freewheeling, 90s-style alt-rock delight. <\/p>\n

Never maudlin or depressing, oddly uplifting and unexpectedly triumphant, \u2018Rot Forever’<\/i> is a real rough gem that deserves (a lot) of your precious time and attention.<\/p>\n
