\"\"In a scene full of genres and sub-genres, occasionally an album comes along that delivers rock in its purest form. With their debut full-length \u2018Higher Power,\u2019<\/i> Canadian trio The Dirty Nil<\/b> do just that. Over the course of 27 minutes, they deliver an enthralling set of raw rock ‘n\u2019 roll songs that don\u2019t dwell on complicated matters. The rousing ‘No Weaknesses\u2019<\/i> sets the tone early on with its ferocious approach; sonically distorted and subtly intense.<\/p>\n

From start to finish, ‘Higher Power\u2019<\/i> demands to be played loud as The Dirty Nil<\/b> have delivered an almighty ruckus of a record. ‘Zombie Eyed\u2019<\/i> and rumbles away with squeaking guitars. ‘Lowlives\u2019<\/i> is equally thrilling with its unrelenting energy, a Cobain-esque impassioned vocal release, and fuzzed up bass line.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Likewise ‘Wrestle Y\u00fc to Husker D\u00fc\u2019<\/i> comes off as sludgy and dense, with Luke Bentham\u2019s words supplying a slacker anthem of \u201cI don\u2019t care, fuck him.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

‘Friends In the Sky\u2019<\/i> highlights their pop sensibilities complimenting its garage rock vibe, whereas ‘Violent Hands\u2019<\/i> and ‘Bruto Bloody Bruto\u2019<\/i> sum up what The Dirty Nil<\/b> are all about; ferocious and scrappy yet embraces a vintage rock tone. Likewise, ‘Fugue State\u2019<\/i> provides a blistering 45 seconds with Bentham\u2019s yelping and shaking bass line.<\/p>\n

‘Know Your Rodent\u2019<\/i> is a more spacious effort settling into a slacker-like skin before erupting in the chorus with stark power chords. ‘Helium Dreamer\u2019<\/i> explodes with bombastic drums and twisting tempo. Closing track ‘Bury Me At The Rodeo\u2019<\/i> ties things up with its self-reflective tone and steady tempo.<\/p>\n

‘Higher Power\u2019<\/i> is delivered with intent and musical honesty. The Dirty Nil<\/b> refuse to confine themselves to a style or sound, instead forming a head-first approach. The end result is a satisfying rough and ready album that thrives off big guitars, venomous vocals and a thunderous rhythm section. Play it loud and then some.<\/p>\n
