The heroes\u2026) have created an interesting, dense and rewarding experience that doesn\u2019t pander to easy wins, but instead wins you over with repeated listens and a little bit of investment. <\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/southtownelanes.bandcamp.com\/album\/give-up-the-ghost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Give up the Ghost by Southtowne Lanes<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite this, <b>Southtowne Lanes<\/b> have made it easy for <i> \u2018Give Up The Ghost\u2019<\/i> to sink its claws in, and there\u2019s plenty of big hooks and huge melodies along the way to tease you along. Take the percussive, juddering end to <i> \u2018The Circle\u2019<\/i>, the pumping, fist-in-the-air vocals on the brilliant <i> \u2018Out of the Blue\u2026 (Winter)\u2019 <\/i> or the wonderfully triumphant chorus to <i> \u2018The Choir of the Night (Summer)\u2019 <\/i>. Such moments help you make sense of the chaos \u2013 which is handy as <i>\u2018Give Up The Ghost\u2019<\/i> often feels like it\u2019s teetering on the edge of collapse. In fact, it\u2019s so tense and fraught, it feels like <b>Southtowne Lanes<\/b> are playing right on the breaking point. It makes for an exciting record and I can only imagine how thrilling it is to witness songs such as <i>\u2018And Into The Black\u2019<\/i> in the flesh. <\/p>\n<p>A concept of sorts, set over a calendar year and based around reflection and the ghosts of the past, <i>\u2018Give Up The Ghost\u2019<\/i> is intelligent and downbeat and as stark as the artwork suggests. It\u2019s an album for grey skies and rainy days when you want to just bury your head under a blanket.
