While nothing ground-breaking, Homebound<\/b>\u2019s sophomore effort ticks every conventional box for an entertaining, emotion-laden record.<\/p>\n

Home-grown pop-punk is currently riding on the crest of a wave. With the successes of Neck Deep and As It Is, the stakes of a genre that once quivered in the shadows have never been higher. Farnham\u2019s Homebound<\/b> have stepped forward less than a year after debut \u2018Coming Of Age\u2019<\/i> to prove their worth at a time where revolution is crucial, however \u2018Permanence EP\u2019<\/i> fails to offer anything wildly innovative. However, should genre upheaval matter when a band clearly enjoys what they\u2019re playing? <\/p>\n

True to their genre\u2019s well-trodden path, opener \u2018Blossom\u2019<\/i> opens with nostalgic presence driven by contemplative guitars, although a little too much time is spent on the instrumental. \u201cMy bones may break but the words stay true, everything I know I owe it all to you,\u201d<\/i> cries the heartfelt monotone of vocalist Charlie Boughton in true pop punk contemplation. Similarly, the racing heartbeat of \u2018Worthwhile\u2019<\/i> projects a dire loneliness that unashamedly takes everything to heart, portraying a wounded ego with every sorrowful note passing the lump in Boughton\u2019s throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeasons change and your friendships will fade,\u201d<\/i> warns \u2018Bittersweet\u2019<\/i>, as the summer anthem teams up energetic guitars alongside Americanised vocals with a distinct southern English twang \u2013 sure, it\u2019s been done before, but it\u2019s good to hear nonetheless. A restless and determined self-assertion, \u2018Grounded\u2019<\/i> reminds that \u201cwe all have a point to prove,\u201d<\/i> as Sam Taylor defines his consummate talent while raging behind the drum kit.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s only so many times you can try before you give up, as the larger-than-life \u2018Cave In\u2019<\/i> reminds. Transitioning from an acoustic opening to a melodic existential contemplation narrated by Boughton\u2019s familiar disdainful tones, the EP closes on the perfectly-executed sorrow the genre has spent years trying to put into words.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a tough task, breaking a mould that everyone\u2019s been sitting in for far too long. While Homebound<\/b> haven\u2019t succeeded in that colossal mission, they\u2019ve created a fully enjoyable record from start to finish with \u2019Permanence EP\u2019<\/i>, which is an achievement in itself.<\/p>\n
