You have to admire their honesty as their sophomore EP, <i>&lsquo;First Light&rsquo;<\/i>, is perfectly moulded in the sound and tone of those bands. <\/p>\n<p>Over the course of five songs, <b>DOH<\/b> produce a range of well-polished, energetic rock with soaring choruses sprinkled throughout. Although that sounds promising on paper, <b>Day Old Hate<\/b> find themselves in the position of being one of dozens (if not hundreds) of bands of their kind.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>The title track opens the EP and sees the five-piece set out their stall with driving guitars with favourable vocals from Oliver Swift, who shows he&rsquo;s more than capable holding his own throughout the EP. It provides a rush of adrenaline to kickstart the five songs on offer, but it is outweighed by a sense of familiarity.<\/p>\n<p>As the band settle into their stride with songs like <i>&#8216;Secrets&rsquo;<\/i> and <i>\u2018Fifteen\u2019<\/i>, you begin to hear <b>DOH<\/b> are a tight-knit unit yet stylistically they fall into a safety zone, coming off as ineffective and formulaic. <\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018Minutes, Hours, Days\u2019<\/i> highlights <b>DOH<\/b>\u2019s tendency to provide big, poppy hooks with its bombastic chorus and equally boisterous lead guitar. A thoroughly energetic number that serves as a stand out track. The EP is tied up with <i>\u2018Don\u2019t Chase Me\u2019<\/i> which plays off the soft, atmospheric verse into a bursting, uplifting chorus format. Structurally its effective but, like <b>DOH<\/b>\u2019s style in general, it\u2019s been done plenty of times before.<\/p>\n<p>Although they\u2019ve delivered an abundance of big, favourable chorus, <i>\u2018First Light\u2019<\/i> as a whole comes off as pretty routine which is a shame for <b>Day Old Hate<\/b>. For a melodic alt-rock band, they tick all the right boxes yet so do many others.
