On <em>\u2018Dogs and Cats \/ Living Together\u2019,<\/em> the band\u2019s debut record, there\u2019s a sentimental, feel-good factor that\u2019s evident on almost every track. Right from opening track <em>\u2018Slumber\u2019,<\/em> there\u2019s a clear sense of familiarity from the tracks on offer.<\/p>\n<p>For most bands, it could be argued that creating a record that sounds like others that came before them isn\u2019t entirely an achievement. Yet, what works well for <strong>the Stayawakes<\/strong>, is the harnessing of an accomplished sound that\u2019s disappeared from the indie-rock scene over the last 15 years or so. In this light, the record serves as a sort of flashback to the type of beloved music of the late 1990\u2019s and early 2000\u2019s. It feels like a soundtrack to adolescence that isn\u2019t overly brash, bullish or aggressive. Instead, <em>\u2018Dogs and Cats \/ Living Together\u2019<\/em> carries a light-weight, stylistically soft touch, whilst still retaining an indie-punk sound.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Stayawakes - Inevitable Truth\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OTBa7JokBVg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Tracks like <em>\u2018Jake\u2019,<\/em> \u2018<em>Little Explorer\u2019<\/em> and recent single<em> \u2018Inevitable Truth\u2019<\/em> show off the band&#8217;s best qualities, all spiked with grooves and hooks, from swaying guitar leads to shifting keyboard swirls beneath the main mix of the tracks\u2019 jumpy beats. There\u2019s a focus on instrumentation here, with abrasive crashing cymbals and open hi-hats blushing beneath dynamic leads. While throwing plenty of guitar solos into the mix heightens the nostalgic vibe.<\/p>\n<p>On first listen its the album&#8217;s good-nature that shines through. But beneath the tonality, there\u2019s a concentration on growing up and reflection of the past that adds an extra dimension to the weight of the record. It\u2019s personal, easy to relate to and all wrapped up in a neat brightly coloured package.
