Imagine a world without Panic! At The Disco<\/b>. Having trouble? \u2018Death of a Bachelor\u2019<\/i> introduces the daunting concept that their lifeline Brendon Urie isn\u2019t immortal.<\/p>\n

If Fall Out Boy\u2019s \u2018American Beauty\/American Psycho\u2019<\/i> had you on the edge of your seat this time last year, Panic!<\/b>\u2019s place in the lasting emo trinity is earned once again by their fifth full-length. These days, however, it\u2019s tough to tell whether to reference Panic!<\/b> as a \u201cthey\u201d or a \u201che\u201d, given founding member Brendon Urie is the last man standing. However, it\u2019s impossible to tell this entire record relies on him alone, as \u2018Death of a Bachelor\u2019<\/i> proves as fundamental to their development as that elusive exclamation mark.<\/p>\n

Brendon knows exactly how to kick off such an anticipated release, opening on the punchy gravitas of lead single \u2019Victorious\u2019<\/i>, name-dropping like its life depends on it and casually dropping some incredible analogies like, \u201c50 words for murder and I\u2019m every one of them.\u201d<\/i> The Pulp Fiction-meets-James Dean groove of \u2018Don\u2019t Threaten Me with a Good Time\u2019<\/i> menaces its way into the gospel optimism of \u2019Hallelujah\u2019<\/i>, which on the whole appears as the weaker black sheep of the record.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Grasping the otherwise morbid concept of Brendon\u2019s character\u2019s mortality as suggested in the video for \u2018This Is Gospel\u2019, the petrifying \u2018Emperor\u2019s New Clothes\u2019<\/i> instantly displays how he can handle this band with his own two hands. No matter how many decades it\u2019s been since you last said \u201cfinders keepers, losers weepers\u201d<\/i>, you\u2019ll be saying it for weeks now.<\/p>\n

The suave Sinatra-esque title track effortlessly lays the dancefloor for the \u201820s energy of \u2019Crazy=Genius\u2019<\/i> which would happily own a slot on Jay Gatsby\u2019s playlist. Similarly, the towering catchy denunciation of the City of Angels in \u2018LA Devotee\u2019<\/i> is the sing-along Panic! track we\u2019ve waited for since \u201905. However, the fun stops there.<\/p>\n

Sadly, the record suffers a triple misfire and shunts the word \u201cflawless\u201d right out of this review. Flinging back to the quirky Pretty.Odd era, \u2018Golden Days\u2019<\/i> frames the corny \u2018The Good, the Bad and the Dirty\u2019<\/i>, while the swaying \u2018House of Memories\u2019<\/i> brings this trio of uneventful fillers to an end. However, on that note, the solemn closing melody of \u2018Impossible Year\u2019<\/i> presents Brendon\u2019s signature breathtaking high notes to suggest that this was a minor blip. <\/p>\n

Sure, the days where start-to-finish perfect Panic!<\/b> records were left behind the moment \u2018A Fever You Can\u2019t Sweat Out\u2019<\/i> ended its reign, but \u2018Death of a Bachelor\u2019<\/i> is still an incredibly addictive addition to their catalogue. Long live Brendon Urie.<\/p>\n
